911DA Story: Story
On Sept. 11, 2001, I was at the Sterling Grade School library where I work as a media specialist. When my co-worker got a phone call from her husband telling her to turn on the library's TV, we watched in shock and horror at what was happening. Since the library is one of the few places in the school that has cable television, teachers stopped in throughout the day -- I was there when many people on our staff learned of the day's tragic events.
At this time I was five months pregnant with my first child. All I could think about was, "How can this be happening? What kind of world am I bringing this child into?" Since that day, we have heard many stories of babies born since that day who will never know their fathers. That is a pain I cannot imagine.
Older generations remember where they were when Kennedy was assassinated. I can remember being in a 5th grade classroom when the Challenger exploded, the teacher bringing in a radio and all of us huddled around it, listening in shocked disbelief. A new generation of Americans will always, always remember where they were and what they were doing on 9/11/01.
This event has made me so proud to be an American. Like the might phoenix, we will rise again from the ashes.
