I'm ok ... had I made the train I was trying to this AM, I would have been in the WTC when the plane hit. Pays to be late sometimes. Instead I was forced to get off the subway due to "police activity" at Brooklyn Bridge - this was just after 9am. Got out to the street and saw the tower on fire
... at least 4 floors. Then I saw the other tower on fire too. Was standing next to some people that were in the building across from the Tower - they saw the plane (1st plane) hit and then saw people jumping out the windows. It was absolutely the most horrible thing I have ever witnessed in my life.
As I was standing there watching, still not completely believing what I was seeing, I heard from someone that had been in the WTC that she had been told when they got out of the building that there was a chance the buildings would collapse. No official word had come yet. I was still very close to the WTC and that information was enough to get me walking North. A NY University bus happened to stop near where I was walking and he was letting everyone on that could fit. Got me up to 8th street and the guy next to me
had a radio so I knew what was going on. Heard then that they shut down Manhanttan - in and out. Next stopped by Kent's apt on 14th street to see if he was home. He wasn't so continued to head North. Had my pass to get into the MetLife building on 23rd street (One Madison Avenue) so that's where I am now. They have closed the adjacent MetLife Tower building but the office I'm in is remaining open to all - cafeteria is running all day and they are running a blood drive downstairs which I'm heading too after
this email. I'm 0- ... universal donor.
My KPMG office at 3rd and 47th is being evacuated - not sure why. Most of the colleagues that we had working in the WTC have been accounted for but some that were nearby at 52 Broadway (CHase) have not. There running an open conference call line now to try to account for everyone.
More later ... cell phones are useless ... regular phones are iffy. At the moment, email seems to be the best.
