I was in Las Vegas with several co-workers on a combination business/pleasure trip. We were called at our hotel by relatives back East the morning of 9/11, and immediately turned on the TV to see the horrific events taking place. The business conference in Vegas may or may not have been cancelled -- we don't know. We just decided we needed to get home to friends and family. Obviously we couldn't fly home, and calling rental companies for cars to drive back to Baltimore was futile. Luckily one person in our group had rented an SUV. So 5 of us, with all of our luggage, piled in and headed back East. It took us three days. It's the only time I've driven cross country. It's a shame it wasn't the kind of trip where we could stop along the way to enjoy our beautiful country...

We let our company's travel agency worry about complaints from the car rental company for taking the car cross country.
