I apologize for not checking in on you earlier but was preoccupied with my family, who are all safe, if not exactly okay. My mother, who runs a school on 109th St in Manhattan, has been dealing with her kids' fears and questions. My sister Monique and her daughter Sharese are okay in the Bronx, but shaken. My sister Jenifer, who runs a flight school in S. Florida, will have to deal with fears about the new students who will be coming her way and the need to avoid prejudging any of them. My brother Gregg, a flight attendant for United, knew the crew of the plane that went down in PA, and was scheduled to fly that route yesterday before the hijackings. He's fearful of losing his job, and, probably, of keeping it.

As for me, I fear that our response will kill as many innocents as the hijackings did and that the best cures for terrorism - a just peace in Israel and Palestine, a fairer distribution of the world's wealth - seem to have fallen far down the agenda.
