I was sitting at my desk when a co-worker who was home ill called to tell me the news. Having read the book `America the Vulnerable' several years prior, I commented to my other co-wrkers, `This is only the begining". One week later I sitting at the same desk listening to the latest reports when the poem `9-18-01' poured out of me.

take down
the flags

and with respect

fold them
into their nest

silence the televisions

and let the journalists
put their messages
to rest

let the world's evils
be attended to
by spies

and comfort our fears
by whispering to us

sweet little lies
