911DA Story: Story

I usually sleep late. On the morning of September 11th, 2001, the phone rang. It was a friend in New York City calling. I hadn't talked to him in awhile so it was a nice surprise to get his call. I remembered asking "what's going on?" And he replied "Just watching the craziness unfold here...turn on your tv." I did, and then I hung up the phone. I didn't say goodbye or anything, I guess I was shocked at what I was seeing.
A few years back, I was flying into Newark, NJ after a trip to London, and the plane flew over the towers on our approach. They were beautiful. But until I turned on the news that morning, I never thought of all the people that worked in them. I had been there, I had been over them. They were crumbling before my eyes.
A few days later, I was at the neighborhood market and ran into a lady I had worked with at St.Joe's hospital a few years back. She asked me if "I had heard about Dr. Betru." Turns out a doctor I had known in the ER, Yeneneh Betru, was on the plane that struck the Pentagon. I didn't even finish grocery shopping.
