911DA Story: Story
I am a New Yorker. Even though I was born in Miami, i moved up to NY with my family when I was 4 years old and was raised in Westchester County. When I heard about the planes hitting the WTC, I was just about to start my reading lesson. The Assistant Principal came into my room, walkie talkie in hand, and asked me if I was from New York. Then she proceeded to tell me about the planes and by that time, one of the towers had already collapsed. I asked if she could please take over my class, and I walked briskly, heart pounding because I knew of one person who worked in the WTC...my friend's husband. When I saw what was being broadcasted on TV in the main office, I could not believe my eyes. It was like a dream...a bad one. All I could think of "Jack is in there. He's dead." Well, luckily, I found out later, he had made it out. But not without scars. He will always have them emotionally. It was a horrific day and I can only imagine what it must have been like for the survivors and those who never made it out. It is a painful reminder of man's inhumanity to man. I pray something of this magnitude will never happen again.
