RC Story: Story
I was in my second day of orientation at Einstein Medical Center as a new-grad emergency room RN. They let us out early, of course, and my husband came to pick me up. Somehow taking the subway seemed too menacing. My recollection is that without having heard a call to do so, we drove to the Red Cross center on Spring Garden Street to donate blood. I really do think we just KNEW that that's what we were supposed to do, somehow. It turned out everyone else knew that, too, and after a lengthy wait, we were told that we would be contacted if our blood was needed later on. I don't remember disappointment or anything like that--I remember how amazing it was to be with all those other people, and the feeling that in a crisis we had all had the same response. That's the power of the Red Cross, isn't it?
