NMAH Story: Story

I work the night shift at a local hospital. I came home that Sept morning and crawled into bed for a couple hours sleep before I had to take my oldest daughter for an ultrasound appt. The radio woke me and on the radio I heard a plane had just struck the World Trade Center. I heard what the announcer was saying on the radio but It wasn't sinking in. I never imagined it was something happening right at that second. I thought it was perhaps the anniversary of a past terroist attack. Thats when the second plane struck and the World Trade Center collapsed. I rushing out the door late for my appt. As I drove down the road listening to the horrors unraveling on the radio, I heard the emergency broadcast wailing and as I drove past a neighborhood base I could hear sirens screaming and the fighter jets were taking off one after another. I heard someone on the radio scream, "one is headed this way"! I thought for sure we were under attack. Especially with all of the military bases here I thought we were at war.
I was frightened, shocked and saddened like all of America. Like most people I watched and help my breath for the next week waiting and worrying over what would happen next.
Things will never be the same. When I hear a jet fly overhead my heart still pound.
