Dear Uncle Jim -
Thanks for writing - I am so sad about all of this and just hope and pray that we can find another way to respond to this threat. I woke up yesterday defiant and thinking why should we give up our freedoms and rights so easily? We didn't do this to ourselves and if we choose to live in repression they will have triumphed - I am not willing to do that but I have seen signs of the police state growing around me and the easy acceptance of that fate as if we were bad children needing to be punished. I was watching television on tuesday night and watched in horror as 5 beefy policemen beat the shit out of a man who was trying to get through a check point in lower Manhattan - the commentators acted as if that was entirely reasonable? Let's hope the hammer doesn't get to hot on that busy anvil.
I have had a hard time adapting to life in NYC these past 3 years - often feeling so deeply the lack of compassion that people have for the suffering humans face down on the sidewalk in front of them. No one can carry too much of another's pain here - but than again the rough love of these New Yorkers will wrap around you and bite you in the ass when the worst possible thing happens. It is hard to be living alone now but it also prompts me to go out and find someway to help - I am a student at The Swedish Institute for Massage Therapy and we will put together a team of students and supervisors to go and comfort the rescue workers.
I think of you and Jeanne often - please send my love to Adam and his family.
Love, Melanie

dear melanie..... I didn't know that you were so close to the horror. It happened in your neighborhood!? what has happened and "our"reaction to it will define the rest of our lives I quess. Kharma is a force of nature. my heart goes out to so many places......... the firemen: suddenly that term takes on a huge metaphor. I'm glad that you are safe and well, thanks for thinking of me. Its like living on top of a busy anvil. love, jim
