My family and I are extremely upset by the blatant materialism that we perceive as we watch the "compensation" for the surviors of September 11th unfold. We were totally supportive of the effort to assist the wives and children of those murdered in terriorist attack. We donated a $250 towards that effort in the days following the incident. I question that donation now. Why should the public donate money towards a cause if the government is going to make a tragedy into a bonanza for the survivors? When did it become the role of the government to compensate citizens for the loss of their family members? How does the death of one person become more valuable than others? If we compensate these "victims" they why don't we compensate all others for death as a result of natural, accidental or criminal causes? Why did not these "victims" have insurance or other back up means for the loss of their spouse or other means of support? If we as a country want to disperse the revenue of our government to special classes of individual, then let us begin with those that have suffered the loss of their family members who have given their lives in the armed services and the defense of their country. Those who remain should be thankful that they live in this wonderful country and have the opportunity to pick up their life and move forward not for how much they and their lawyers can bilke the country for. Where has individual reponsibility for ones own care gone?
