911DA Story: Story

I am a Captain with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office. I have a daughter living and working in New York City. On that fateful morning I was in a police meeting at the North Syracuse School District Office discussing the upcoming school semester.

I was advised of the first plane strike by pager alert. As soon as the second plane struck, my only thought was to locate my daughter,Maggie. First her home phone; already left for work. Next at the office; lines dead. And lastly her cellular phone; no answer.

I, along with a detail of Deputy Sheriffs, prepared to respond immediately since we are less than four hours away. We were prevented from going. No need for any additional police officers we were advised. Even though officers responded from around the world, our Department did nothing.

My personal concern was for my daughter's safety. My professional concern was to assist the NYPD in any way possible.

At 1:30 p.m. I received a message that my daughter was safe. She fled to Brooklyn. I finally made contact with her early in the evening.

Two weeks later we were in New York City assisting the NYPD.

My daughter still lives in Manhattan.
