911DA Story: Story

My mother phoned shortly after the second plane hit the towers. She was upset and wanted to know if I had heard the news. I told her I had been watching 'Good Morning America' and could not tear myself away from the television since they had broken in with the images of the first tower in flames.
I explained to her that I was worried about a friend who had just taken a job directly across the street from the Twin Towers. It was only her second week of working downtown.
Mom tried to console me and wanted to make sure that I was alright before we hung up. She was especially concerned about my health because I was barely three months pregnant with my first child. (I was scheduled for my very first sonogram later that day.)
Early in the afternoon, my sister-in-law phoned. She was very upset and had some news about my mother. Mom was being rushed to the emergency room because she was suffering from a massive heart attack.
My husband and I arrived at the hospital and waited with the rest of my family as a Catholic nun tried to speak words of comfort to us. Soon the nun would leave the room and return later with the horrible news. My mother had passed away. She was only 61 years old. She would never see my child.
My friend survived the attacks because her train was late. She was able to escape uptown to her mother's apartment before the second tower fell.
I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy on April 1, 2002.
