My husband and I sat with butterflies in out stomachs as we waited to see the doctor on September 11th, 2001 at 8:40 am. On the day before, I had taken an over-the-counter pregnancy test, and it was positive. The news was on in his office and reporters were everywhere on the screen. Suddenly, the news showed a picture of the first tower burning and stated that a plane had just hit it. I remember thinking, "what a horrible accident." My husband and I chatted a bit, guessing what could have caused such a freak commotion. Then, to our complete surprise and disgust, the second plane hit. Immediately,we knew this was no accident. Here we were anxiously awaiting to confirm our news and celebrate the new life we were bringing into the world, the miracle we had been given, as so many others were dying as we sat there. Our emotions completely torn-uncertainty, anger, saddness, hatred, surprise, dread, guilt, anxiety. And ironically, happiness, thrill, joy, love, exuberance, peace. The day for us was one of definite uncertainty. We wanted so much to share our great news...our new life. But how could we when so many were in mourning-guessing the future of our great country?
My husband and I (me especially) have this past year learned to count our blessings...count them one by one. Yes, we were bringing a life into this uncertain, hatred-filled world, but we were also bringing a life into this free, strong, loving world. A world we love, and a country we are proud to say we love! GOD BLESS AMERICA, AND GOD BLESS EACH ONE OF US!!!!
