911DA Story: Story

I remember last year on September 11, getting to school and after my zero hour class I hear something about a plane crash in New York. It wasn't anything unique and different at first because we always hear about plane crashes. I wasn't quite sure why everyone was making such a big deal about it, but then I saw a parent walking around with a portable TV in her hand; a group consisting of a few friends and me stopped her and were allowed to watch her television. Before that day I had never even heard of the Twin Towers or the World Trade Center. I also personally knew no one in New York. I was basically clueless, as always.
I never believed that terrorism and mass homocide could take place in such a great and powerful free country. Once, I learned how many people were hurt, injured, or somewhat affected emotionally by this horrifying act, my feelings were mostly of general sorrow. I just thank God that he has protected my family, me, and those of us in another part of the country. My heart aches for those injured, killed, and emotionally devistated.
I am so greatful for this nation's community and how we have gathered together in this time to sorrow, however where was this community before September 11? Will it always take a national disaster to bring this nation together?
