Description

Visitors to the Smithsonian’s September 11: Bearing Witness to History exhibit are given the opportunity to share their own September 11 story via closed-line telephone voicemail. The following is the introductory and explanatory message on the voicemail system:

“How did you witness history on September 11th? How was your life changed because of that day?

“By leaving a message you are agreeing to let your voice and story be collected by the September 11 Digital Archive, a project of George Mason University. We appreciate your help in documenting this event.

“You’ll have three and one-half minutes to talk. Please start by telling us your age and your zip code. Then tell us your story and how your life has changed.”

After this message, visitors can leave their personal message on a voicemail recording.

By November 7, 2002 the September 11 Digital Archive processed and cataloged a total of 425 of these recordings.
