Monday, March 18, 2002 6:18 PM Unfair Discrimination Against Gays/Lesbians for 9/11 Surviving Partners I have just read an on-line article at: http://uspolitics.about.com/library/weekly/aa031102a.htm that describes how gay and lesbian partners of survivors are being discriminated against. The article mentions that gay partners of the September 11th tragedy will not necessarily be eligble for the same compensation as heterosexual family members who lost their loved ones. The article further mentions that even illegal aliens will receive benefits! Do I understand correctly that the law is being relaxed for illegal aliens, but taken literally when it comes to persons that are gay or lesbian? If so, I want you to know that I think this is a second tragedy, perhaps worse than that of September 11th. Please let me know if this hypocrisy is real. I am a gay person living in California and have felt that I've been a second-class citizen all of my life (I'm now 46). Just as black persons were denied basic equal rights in recent history, so are gay persons today. It was wrong to discriminate against blacks then and it is wrong to discriminate against gays and lesbians today. And, giving benefits to illegal aliens proves that this isn't a legal matter. Benefits are being given to ILLEGAL residents, but are not being given to the surviving partners of gays and lesbians. This is inequitable and un-American. Shame on those who are promoting this kind of hate. This kind of hate is what we detest in the terrorists around the world. As you consider rules for administering the relief fund, I ask that you apply basic international human rights standards, and the general principle of equality, by including among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners, as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. Many lesbian and gay people were killed in the September 11th attacks. According to the television reports, an average $1.6 million payment is more than most citizens will earn in a lifetime. Public statements by certain whiners among the beneficiaries that they should be allowed to litigate (i.e., sue the airlines out of existence) cause ordinary Americans to become callous. Why not pay victims of flight 103? Why not pay Mr. wife? Why not pay the families of servicemen who died in Desert Storm or in Afghanistan or in upcoming battles around the globe? I fear that our immediate response to this tragedy with this offer will set an undesireable and impossible precedent. My cousin almost lost his life in the Pentagon that day. The government is doing everything possible for him, but what if he had been homosexual? Would he and his life partner be shunned by the same government? Those who lost their lives whether working in the towers, on one of the planes, in the Pentagon, or as a firefighter/policeman and had life partners, should be given the same benefits as anyone else. Monday, January 07, 2002 7:40 AM Compensation To Whom it may concern; I am truly sorry for the loss these families have suffered. I pray every night for there comfort, but it really upsets me that they for some reason feel that the US government owes them something. The Us government did not destroy the World Trade Towers. The American public gave and gave generously to support the victims families. Now the US Government has set up a relief fund and they have the gull to complain that they are not getting enough. We are told that this war on terrorism has just begun, what will future victims family member expect for us. 9/11 was a true tragedy, lets not make it a bigger one by allowing the US Government to be held hostage by greed. These people should be thankful for the generosity displayed by the American public and the US Government and except the helping hand instead of biting it. Each and every person that lost their life in the World Trade Tower had the responsibility to provide for their family, in the event of their death, they could have been killed just as easy commuting to work. Would the government still be expected to compensated their families? Please don't get the idea that I am against the Government helping these people, I am just outraged at the attitude these ingrates are displaying. The Government should set the rules for this relief fund and if they don't like it they don't have to except it. Let them sue the people responsible, like Bin Laden and Al-Qaida? Sunday, March 17, 2002 10:21 AM 9/11 compensation for gays Hello - I just became aware that gay/lesbian victims of 9/11 are not receiving the same benefits as their heterosexual counterparts, including those who are illegal aliens in this country. perhaps i have been misinformed, but if not i definately wanted to respond to this. i hope that this situation will be re-evaluated. I just read some of the bio's of the gay/lesbian victims. Some of these profile individuals who have made exceptional contributions to our country. I don't know how unmarried heterosexual survivors are being handled, but please keep in mind that in most states homosexual partners are unmarried not by choice, but because they aren't given the opportunity to marry under state law. Some of these partnerships have lasted longer than most marriages I know, and certainly more than alot of the marriaged that are being recognized by the survivor benefits. I hope that all in volved will open their hearts and minds to reconsider this situation and allow room for more fair treatment of these homosexual victims and their survivors. thank you for your consideration. He and his ideals - if you could call them that - are from a portion of the United States that is about as foreign to the Northeast as is Pakistan. This importantly should include the partners and children of same sex unions. I am in a stable, substitute-family gay relationship with my partner of 18 years. We own a house jointly, share a car, vote, belong to a church, and take in wandering teenagers from both sides of the family as needed, teaching them life skills and humane values. There is no question in my mind that we are a stabilizing influence on society and engaged citizens of America. When the thought occurred to me that, ironically, because we are denied any kind of legal recognition by the state, that we would also be denied benefits had either one of us been a 9/11 victim, I am forced to remember how much I rely on good luck rather than thoughtful contemporary policy for the stability in my own life. On that day, America realized that its citizens were not made of Mexican-Americans, Italian-Americans, Asian-Americans, African-Americans, or any other type of hyphenated-Americans. Instead, American realized that alll its citizens were just plain Americans. It deeply outrages me how the families and partners of gay and lesbian heroes that died on September 11th will not necessarily receive the same benefits as the families and spouses of heterosexual victims of the terrorist attacks of that day. If congress decides to take away all collateral source deductions, then maybe ALL the families would accept the fund payouts. As it stands now, my family still recieves "zero" from the fund. I would rather use the fund but it appears that the rules will not let me. I feel that this is still unfair my family because we had life insurance & it will probably drive my family to sue.
