here's the lowdown:

peace park could work but it will be f-ing cold.
here's what i propose:
we cut our losses. the publicity has not been so huge
that it would look bad. most folks would not come out
due to the cold. i simply have not had the time this
week to try to get something more together, and i
think that having the event indoors on intention is
kind of opposite what we had hoped: to have it
outdoors while we can...
unless anyone is drastically opposed, i will start
publicizing tomorrow that the event is cancelled due
to unforeseen bad weather...on our website, at least.
i will also go down on saturday and put signs up in
library mall, sort of apology signs.
that's about it. s'ok. i guess we just found out that
two weeks notice is not necessarily enough...

this is an anti-war movement. that's political. i don't think anyone
would have a problem with the idea that a peace coalition would have
politics, and it's important to make it clear that the coalition as a
whole determines those politics, not the cc...

i have to respectfully disagree. "politics" is not a word that's
reserved for the socialist community. i fully appreciate and share
your stated desire to keep mapc accessible to the widest audience of
people opposed to the war. for example, i don't think one of our
points of unity should read "smash u.s. imperialism". however, the
idea that "politics" is somehow a dirty word that would turn people
off is almost insulting to the intellegence of the people coming
around this movement. no one from the "socialist community" has lost
sight of a desire for broad appeal. quite the contrary...
for someone who keeps raising objections about our choice of language
and not wanting to alienate people, your messages about the logo were
extremely alienating. "septuagenarians" isn't a word in common use,
and the statement, "my best advice to the kids and the grown-ups who
want to hassle this is 'get a life'" is not exactly welcoming to
people who don't share your set of political beliefs.
first of all, refering to the members of the student/youth caucus as
"kids" is *EXACTLY* the kind of crap that turned them/us off from MAPC
in the first place. yes, we're not over 40 yet, but that doesn't mean
we don't have intellengence, or that our concerns shouldn't be taken
seriously. please show some respect for the people you're in
coalition with. demands to "get a life" and "get with the program"
are ways to try to bully people into agreeing with you, not ways to
carry out a respectful discussion with someone you disagree with.
please be consistent with your attitudes towards alienting people and
maintaining broad appeal for MAPC (something we all agree with). it
totally undercuts your position if you denounce the things you
disagree with ("international solidarity" and "sets the politics",
which are quite mild, in my opinion) as "lefty-cliched" and
"alienating", while you turn off wide layers of people with your own
statements. for example, folks on the student/youth caucus list were
so insulted by your messages they requested that your address be
banned from posting to the list. they are now doing damage control to
make sure people don't get the wrong idea about what mapc is about.
if you're only concerned about keeping the apolitical, over-50 crowd
around, and are willing to write off the entire student anti-war
movement, we've got a serious issue of strategy to discuss.
i hope we can all learn something from this episode, since we can't
afford to repeat these sorts of mistakes. thanks for taking the time
to read this.

Regarding this logic... I don't see that as a deterrent really. I think
it's hard for a city to send the message it isn't for peace. Making the
city say it is exactly what we should be doing it seems. For if it's not
true, then they must admit it and that would cause change. In other
words, it's easy to be quiet and tolerant of the abuses of the US
government; however, it's hard to explicitly condone or disapprove of
those same actions. It's like denial. But if we provoke discussion and
make people or the city explicitly state their opinion, we will have made
great progress. If there's one characteristic of the "silent majority",
it's just that: they are silent. We should challenge this "majority" to
explicitly state their opinion and their rational. In the end, we aren't
going to change anyones mind, they will have to do that for themselves.
Furthermore, the best catalyst for thought is debate.

Beautiful! Thanks for your work on this, X. The "Madison now
participates directly and indirectly in U.S. military efforts" is a good way
to change the wording to state why Madison has the right to comment on these
matters, while not expressing support or acceptance for the bombing. One
more suggestion, below.
I apologize if this conversation happened at our last meeting (which I
missed) but have we discussed at all what sort of changes we'd support and
which ones we wouldn't? For myself, I think it's important that we insist
that no language supporting the bombing be added. There's other
possibilities we should think of as well, though they'll likely come up in
our conversations with alders.
Also, when we all agree on the wording, we should give this a run by the
whole MAPC, with an intro on why we feel the humanitarian angle is the best
and most productive one to take with the City Council. I'm expecting we'll
hear some disappointment from people who want us to push a politically
unviable stop the bombing resolution. But maybe I'm wrong on that (it's
happened once or twice before, you know).

Hi Everyone,
The progressive caucus thought they would be ready to act on something
AFTER Thanksgiving. Apparently changing "prayers" to "sympathies" was very
divisive last time, so they needed a breather.
I still haven't gotten the in-depth feedback on this--Thursday night I
should. X has been appointed to do this for me.
X suggested we intro the whole text as a "communication" (no
alder's name attached). That could be done BEFORE Thanksgiving.
My first step though will be to call X, to make sure I am
acting on her excellent strategy advice.
I'd like the Policy Committee's input on something though. How far do we
pursue the two-pronged approach? What I'm hearing from the progressive
alders is that they don't want something too "divisive" (presumably to their
own caucus?), which means they want to back the weakest thing we've
presented them with. If we are going to introduce one final text "as a
communication" I definitely need the Policy Committee's OK on what that
final text should be.
OK, I'll get back to you when I know more.

Hello, Coordination Folks.
Wanted to update you on current discussion within Arts and Culture. WE are thinking the best plan may be to do some simplification of the Nov 30 event, and to solicit any and all help we can get from the greater coalition. I will call some volunteers tonight from the list I got last week and get a better idea of what we're dealing with. We're thinking we can pull it off if committees are willing to put an item or two on their agenda to help with the preps.

You should contact X and X as well on this. Tom is

CC because of an elections screw-up and was nominated because he also
represents the same district already on the Dane Co. Board of
Supervisors. He
might be more open since he probably won't try to run for CC for the
next
election.
Also, you don't have to have the text ready by Thursday because it can
be
introduced "By Title Only," which means only the title of the resolution
is
given at that time and you'll have until the Thursday of tthe week
before the
Nov. 20 CC meeting to work out the wording. That's my strong
recommendation!

Hey everyone,
Of all the viewpoints that I've run across, this is one of the most
disturbing. There is an internet group called "The Edge"
http://www.edge.org/documents/whatnow.html
and they are composed of a bunch of intellectual elite (from the looks of
it, middle-aged white males) that discuss philosophical and scientific
topics "to arrive at the edge of the world's knowledge". Anyways, I ran
into this via the homepage of one of the contributors - a prominent
physicist David Deutsch. I have included a little snippet of his reply to
the Edge question "What Now?" [regarding post 911 tactics]. It's really
appalling. He is incredibly deluded to think that "moral relativism" is a
major cause of the 911 terrorist attacks. He considers the acts of "the
west" to be purely in self-defense, while the terrorist acts were purely
evil. I think that it is important for MAPC to understand these
arguments, and to systematically break them down. In fact, I think it
would be a great move of outreach to start taking the best pro-war
articles and analyze them and post them on the web. Regardless, here's
the link and a glimpse of the delusional state of mind representative of
many of the intellectual elite of the west - yikes.

There is no "cycle of violence" that we have to "break" by making the
murderers and their sympathisers feel less angry with us. Their anger is
unjustified: To cleanse the Arabian peninsula of non-Muslims is an immoral
aim, violating the human rights both of non-Muslim residents and of
Muslims who wish to associate with them (and, perhaps more pertinently, to
seek their assistance in defending themselves). To cleanse Israel of Jews
is an aspiration similar in kind but much more evil both in its racist
motivation and in its intention to destroy an entire nation. To replace
secular or less-than-fundamentalist governments by religious
fundamentalist ones in all Islamic countries is an utterly tyrannical
agenda. And there is a fourth unjustified 'grievance' that goes implicitly
with those three: they demand the right to punish the West, by mass
murder, with impunity, if anyone in the West opposes them in pursuing any
of those other 'grievances'.
In contrast, the West's anger, and the West's restrained, careful and
humane response in self-defence, are justified. The problem is not to find
alternatives to defending ourselves against murderers. The exact opposite
is true: this violence will end if and only if we defend ourselves,
effectively. And effectiveness will depend in part on our saying
truthfully what we are doing, and why our stance is not essentially the
same as theirs.
You can perceive our stance and theirs as symmetrical only by expunging
morality from your analysis: seeing all political objectives as being
legitimate, all rival value systems as matters of taste, treating
murderers and their victims with evenhanded sympathy. You have to look at
tolerance and its opposite, intolerance, and pretend that they are two
versions of the same thing. You have to pretend that the richness and
diversity and creativity of our civilisation are playing the same role in
our lives as empty repetition, oppression, and pitiless enforcement of a
monoculture play in theirs.
People wring their hands and say that there must be "better ways of
finding solutions" than warfare. Of course there are. We have already
found them. The nations and people of the West use them all the time. They
are openness, tolerance, reason, respect for human rights -- the
fundamental institutions of our civilisation. But no way of finding
solutions is so effective that it can work when it isn't being used. And
when a violent group defines itself by its comprehensive rejection of all
the values on which problem-solving and the peaceful resolution of
disputes depend, and embarks instead on a campaign of unlimited murder and
destruction, it is morally wrong as well as factually inaccurate to
represent this as a case of our needing "better ways of finding
solutions". That is why we have to insist, by force if necessary, that
everyone else in the world also respect, and enforce, the minimum
standards of civilisation and human rights. Western standards.

FYI, the resolution that Berkeley's City Council passed yesterday, from

It looks like only 1 and 5 of the separated resolution passed, though it's a
bit unclear to me (Berkeley has 8 alders and resolutions need a simple
majority to pass). One important thing we have to decide is what balance to
strike between what we'd REALLY like to say and what will possibly pass City
Council. Although we can generate lots of good community discussion by
bringing a controversial resolution before the Council we know isn't likely
to pass...
I left a message for x about a possible Madison resolution today.

Bombing of Afghanistan

Recommendation: 1) Request the City Manager send letters to our elected
national representatives asking them to take whatever action they can to
cease the bombing of Afghanistan and to seek a legal, nonmilitary
resolution; 2) Endorse and send to these officials, the attached letter
recently presented by Vice Mayor Shirek to the Congressional Black Caucus,
which acknowledges and grieves the tragic events of September 11th; and 3)
adjourn this Council meeting in memory of the innocent civilians in
Afghanistan being harmed and made refugees due to the bombing.

To commend our elected officials and our President for performing the
difficult task of bringing together more than 60 countries to join with us
in the fight against terrorism in the world and to ask the City Manager to
communicate with our President commending him for refusing to rush into a
thoughtless response to the 5000 deaths that occurred on September 11th, but
instead taking the time to bring together an international consensus of
countries from Cuba to Canada and from Saudi Arabia to Russia all joining
with us in our fight to defeat terrorism worldwide.
Moved, seconded, carried (Shirek/Breland) a revised motion presented by
Councilmember Spring to adopt Resolution No. 61,310-N.S. consisting of five
parts. The motion was severed and voted on as follows:
1. Condemn the mass murder of thousands of people on September 11, 2001,
and express our profound grief at the atrocities last month that killed
thousands of innocent people in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, and
acknowledge, honor, and support the heroic rescue efforts on the part of
dedicated police and fire departments, and the city, state, and federal
governments (Abstain - Armstrong, Hawley, Olds)
2. Ask our representatives to help break the cycle of violence, bringing
the bombing to a conclusion as soon as possible, avoiding actions that can
endanger the lives of innocent people in Afghanistan, and minimizing the
risk to American military personnel (Abstain - Armstrong, Hawley, Olds,
Dean)
3. Urge our representatives to concentrate all available resources on
bringing to justice all of those who were complicit in last month1s violent
attack, and work with international organizations toward the same end
(Abstain - Armstrong, Hawley, Olds, Dean)
4. Urge our representatives to devote our government1s best efforts in
collaboration with governments throughout the world, to addressing and
overcoming those conditions such as poverty, malnutrition, disease,
oppression, and subjugation that tend to drive some people to acts of
terrorism (Abstain - Armstrong, Hawley, Olds, Dean)
5. Request that we engage in a national campaign to lessen our dependence
on oil from the Middle East and to commit to a nationwide conversion to
renewable energy sources such as solar and fuel cells, within five years

Because the U.S. has chosen to bomb Afghanistan, one of the most tragic and
war ravaged countries in the world, and because the siege and bombing of
Iraq
continues, the National Coalition for Peace and Justice (NCPJ), a coalition
of the nation's largest peace and justice organizations, urges you to join
with thousands of other concerned citizens from across the country in
demanding "no more victims!" Within hours of the first U.S. air strikes
against Afghanistan, a U.S. missile killed 4 UN mine disposal workers in
Kabul. Over one million Afghan civilians have fled their homes in terror and
hundreds of civilians are reported dead. Already dealing with a humanitarian
crisis, aid workers are now expecting a disaster. In Iraq, the
longest-sustained air campaign since the Vietnam War continues. Since 1998,
U.S. bombs have killed over 300 civilians in Iraq, including two killed
earlier this month in the Iraqi port city of Basra. In addition, U.S.-led
sanctions against Iraq have killed at least one million civilians since
1991.
(See back for talking points). And now there is a threat of the war
engulfing
the entire region. On October 8th, the Bush administration presented a
letter
to the UN Security Council stating: "we may find that our self-defense
requires further actions with respect to other organizations and other
states". Add your weight to stopping the war machine.

along with as many friends and family as you can mobilize!

Urge the President and Secretary of State Powell to:

1. Show the same courage as Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) who broke ranks and

them to support efforts to bring the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks to
justice under law, not through war.
2. Allocate the $1 billion or more needed to rebuild Afghanistan and
encourage the administration to strongly support the UN-led peace process in
Afghanistan.
3. Support measures that will stop damage to the Iraqi economy and further
injury of innocent civilians. This means ending the 11-year-long economic
siege on Iraq, while maintaining an international ban on all arms sales to
Iraq until the Iraqi government respects human rights and the rule of law.
4. Defend civil liberties and condemn attacks on American Arabs, Muslims,
and other U.S. citizens and residents. Note: When calling Members of
Congress, ask to speak with the staffer that handles foreign policy or
national security. Be prepared to leave a brief voice message and your phone
number if necessary.

Hi Everyone,
A couple of things:
I made buttons for the fast. Pick yours up at St. Paul's anytime, and
wear it during the fast, especially on your fast day(s).
We will be having a vigil/rally on Wednesday at 12:30. This will be our
best chance to gather everyone who's fasting throughout the week and get
some
visibility for what we're doing. Everyone please come!
For other events, we will have speakers at 5:30 on Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday, and Friday. There will be a prayer service for peace and for the
fast on Tuesday at 12:05. (Daily mass is at 12:05 on M, W, Th, Friday.)
Finally, the "Break-Fast" potluck has been tentatively moved to 7 pm on
Saturday, which will enable us to hold it at St. Paul's and enable any
Muslim
participants to come to the potluck without breaking Ramadan, which starts
that day. This also gives people time during the day to go to the Peace
Parade that MAPC is doing starting at noon at the MATC Truax campus. Please
let me know whether you can come to the potluck if it's at 7:00 on Saturday
(the 17th).

to a longer fast. For a one day fast there aren't so many health concerns.
