The war in Afghanistan is far from over.  It simply has moved into a new phase since the US has not succeeded in pacifying the country and reintegrating it back into the "global system".  The killing, the massacres and the starvation, will continue as will the inter-ethnic violence.  The Taliban has retreated but is not finished.  And neither is the US strategic project for the region. The "peace movement" must not be lulled simply because the B-52s have stopped for now. Or simply because women can move about in relative freedom, and men can shave and fly kites in Kabul.  The work of the School of the Americas goes on and the new repressive legislation, the war against domestic dissent passed in the name of a "war on terrorism," will continue well into the future. Washington Post November 11, 2001 A Future Veiled in False Hopes By Nafisa Hoodbhoy Twelve years ago, I was astonished by what I found on a trip from my native Pakistan to Afghanistan. I couldn't have imagined a neighboring Muslim country with so many women in public places. Each morning, the Afghan capital was abuzz with young professionals on their way to work, most dressed in Western clothes and some even in miniskirts and high heels as they vied with their fashion-conscious counterparts in Paris. Kabul University, where I saw more female than male students, was another surprise. But even then, the occasional gunfire and bomb blasts in the city -- ruled by Soviet-supported President Najibullah -- were a reminder that these freedoms could prove elusive. Young women on campus, clutching their notepads in the streaming February sunlight, told me apprehensively, "If the mujaheddin take over, they will force us to veil." The encumbering full-lengthburqasthat women now have to wear have become a symbol for Westerners of the ruling Taliban government's oppressive policies. Even President Bush acknowledged as much last week when he condemned the current regime under which "women are imprisoned in their homes, and are denied access to basic health care and education." But it would be an oversimplification to imagine that simply ousting the Taliban will restore basic human rights to women there. Indeed, in its determination to use whatever means necessary to destroy Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda network, the administration is in danger of exacerbating the rivalries among Afghanistan's tribes, whose practices are shrouded in traditions few Americans comprehend. Even though there has been much talk in the West about how to establish a broad-based post-Taliban government that would guarantee the rights of women and ethnic minorities, the United Nations has not seriously begun addressing the role of women in any future form of government. If history is any guide, neither a government led by the exiled former king, Mohammed Zahir Shah, nor one dominated by the Northern Alliance would readily grant women freedom. Instead, the dramatic changes in women's fortunes over the past century are testimony to their fragile position in Afghanistan's oft-rent social fabric. I got a clear sense of that during my 1989 visit. Although many Afghan women I spoke with expressed trepidation about a takeover by Islamic fundamentalists, they could not have predicted how oppressive their lot would soon become. After all, they grew up in a relatively liberal Muslim society; many in Kabul and Kandahar had working mothers -- nurses and doctors, engineers, journalists, factory workers and, of course, teachers. Soviet forces had withdrawn from the country just two weeks before my arrival, and the question foremost on everyone's mind was whether the Soviet-backed Najibullah government would survive the onslaught by the Islamist radicals. As if anticipating his eventual death at the hands of Taliban fundamentalists, the embattled Najibullah was clearly taking no chances -- and he was even recruiting women to help him. At a training school in Kabul, I came across a female trainee reserve force engaged in combat exercises. They told me that their job was to arrest and hand over mujaheddin suspects to authorities. They knew full well what a formidable force the mujaheddin had become. With their most radical factions in Northern Pakistan, they were receiving millions of dollars' worth of arms from the United States, funneled through Pakistan's military ruler, all directed at the goal they would accomplish a few years later  -- removing Najibullah from power. I asked Afghan officials then whether such threats of future instability might put women's freedom on the line. The president of the Afghan Women's Council at the time, Massuma Esmaty Wardak, argued that, on the contrary, women's emancipation was deeply rooted in Afghan history. She pointed out that the country's most famous reformer, King Amanullah, who was inspired by Turkey's secular nation builder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, encouraged sweeping changes for women in the early 20th century. He introduced Western dress, she pointed out, sent girls to study abroad, banned the sale of women, raised the marriage age and abolished the tribal custom known as levirate (where a widow is obliged to marry her brother-in-law). What Wardak and others I talked to failed to mention was that King Amanullah was ousted in 1929, after a brief reign, when conservative tribesmen revolted against his liberal policies. Thereafter, King Zahir Shah, Afghanistan's longest-reigning monarch (1933-1973) -- whom the U.N. has now selected to head the post-Taliban government -- slowed down the changes for women. Yes, women came to enjoy greater liberation than in some other Muslim countries, but encouraging freedom also risked provoking a backlash from the conservatives. Ever since, the role of women has continued to reflect the volatile nature of Afghan society -- and of the dangers of trying to alter traditions by imposing outside standards on the people. The Soviet occupation that followed the bloody communist Saur Revolution in 1978 attempted to force top-down changes in Afghanistan. Peoples Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) workers fanned out into the villages to stop Afghans from selling their daughters and coerced the girls instead to go to school. Conservative tribesmen retaliated by murdering PDPA workers. These changes also triggered a vast exodus of Afghan tribes. Some 3 million Afghans fled the country. Many of those who grew up as orphans of war in Pakistan's refugee camps have become today's Taliban; others are that regime's fiercest critics. The most militant Islamist groups who resisted the Soviet influence banded together under mujaheddin leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar in Peshawar, northern Pakistan. They objected fiercely to Muslim women not wearing the veil and to their working outside the home. Some of his supporters threw acid on women wearing Western dress in Kabul. When I interviewed Hekmatyar in Karachi in 1986, I was surprised to find a soft-spoken man who was fluent in English. But his supporters included Pakistan's Jamaat-e-Islami, the radical Islamist party that enforced gender segregation at Karachi University with acid attacks on female students. (This group has now given an ultimatum to the Pakistani government to stop supporting the U.S.-led anti-terrorist coalition or be overthrown.) Hekmatyar has refused to join the Northern Alliance now backed by the United States in its battle with the Taliban. But many other mujaheddin leaders are members of that alliance, and even less radical ones than Hekmatyar punish women who refuse to wear a burqa. The tribal beliefs in the submission of women go far beyond the Taliban. The stability that the Taliban offered when it snatched power from the warring mujaheddin in 1996 came at a further cost to women. Made up of ethnic Pashtuns, the Taliban enforced the strict Pashtunwali code of honor that requires women to be treated as the property of their men. The militia barredwomen from working in the professions. Without female teachers, schools soon closed. The Taliban issued a decree that forbade all girls from going to school. Women who organized the early protests against the ragtag militia were beaten back. Only two ways of earning a living were left open to them -- beggary and prostitution. Last week I spoke with two Afghan women who have been helping refugees as U.N. staff. They told of women's isolation, cowering in their houses behind darkened windows so that they cannot be seen from the street. Few can read. Many are depressed. Nafisa Nezam, who was in Northern Afghanistan until last month, said that the Taliban have "brought about a new interpretation of 'jihad' to mean fighting women who wear lipstick, nail polish and jewelry." Some have reputedly had their fingers cut off for painting their nails. There have been some brave voices of dissent. Afghan women in Pakistan have banded together as the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA). The group's members told me in Islamabad in 1999 that they lived in mortal fear of being discovered. They know how the extremists treat women who dissent. RAWA's founding president, Meena, was murdered in 1987 -- allegedly by the mujaheddin -- for speaking out against the fundamentalists. About half of the 4 million or so people who fled Afghanistan over the past 20 years are women, and many of them would love to return to their home country once the Taliban is overthrown. Among them, Tahira Shairzai, a former schoolteacher in Kabul who now works in the United States, told me she favors the U.N. choice of an interim government headed by King Zahir Shah. The 86-year-old exiled monarch shares Pashtun ethnicity with the Taliban, but he is popular because he treated ethnic groups even-handedly during his 40-year rule of Afghanistan. Tahira also holds out hope that the Northern Alliance, which allows girls' schools to remain open in the area it controls, will take a positive attitude toward working women. However, the past behavior of the Alliance leaders offers little indication that women's rights will be taken seriously under the next regime. A mishmash of conservative and more moderate tribal leaders, the Alliance is united for the sole purpose of combating the Taliban. A recent meeting ofanti-Taliban leaders in Peshawar demonstrated that women's rights do not figure in their deliberations. What's more, as U.S. bombs hit civilians, the Pashtuns are becoming even more radicalized. The United States has had little success in wooing moderate Pashtuns away from the Taliban -- a move that the administration recognizes is necessary not only to win the current war but because Afghanistan's future stability depends upon cooperation among tribal factions. As the U.S. bombing continues, thousands of armed Pashtun tribesmen are gathering on the Pakistan-Afghan border to fight alongside the Taliban.Political analysts I have spoken with in Pakistan predict that even if the Taliban is routed, it will likely withdraw into the hills and fight the new government. Moreover, the Northern Alliance could plunge into internecine strife. So although there is no doubt in my mind that women will fare somewhat better if the Taliban is overthrown, I wonder what comes next. Unless there is a means of ensuring durable peace, women's rights do not have a fighting chance in Afghanistan. SPONSORS:       [Alders names here.] WHEREAS,        a disastrous humanitarian crisis is underway, with an estimated 7.5 million people in Afghanistan facing critical food shortage or outright starvation this winter; and WHEREAS,        70 percent of these people are women and children, and the UN estimates 400,000 children under five will likely die this year, an increase of over 30 percent from last year; and WHEREAS,        food aid shipments have been disrupted because of U.S bombing in Afghanistan; and WHEREAS,        the aid agencies active in the region, including the Nobel laureate Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Oxfam International and the World Food Program have stated that the U.S. food drops can not meet the increasing and urgent need for assistance; and WHEREAS,        Madison now participates directly and indirectly in U.S. military efforts through many channels, including the federal taxes its citizens pay, and through its citizens' participation in the armed forces; and WHEREAS,        the Mayor and Common Council are appalled at the mass starvation that will result from these actions to which they are a party if the situation is not speedily addressed; and WHEREAS,        The Mayor and Common Council deplore the dishonor such an outcome would be for the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11th; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Mayor and Common Council urge a resolution to the situation that minimizes loss of life; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT humanitarian concerns must now be a top priority for U.S. policy toward Afghanistan, especially as there exists a narrow window of opportunity for supplying food to the region's population before winter makes this difficult or impossible; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT Afghanistan's neighbors should immediately reopen their borders to allow for the safe passage of refugees, and the U.S. and other members of the international community must be prepared to contribute to the economic costs incurred by the flight of desperate Afghan civilians; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the United States must actively support the work of various agencies to deliver assistance in Afghanistan, particularly through overland truck convoys, and support safe humanitarian access to affected populations, in partnership with humanitarian agencies in quantities sufficient to alleviate a large scale humanitarian catastrophe; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the United States should contribute to efforts by the international community to provide long-term, sustainable reconstruction and development assistance for the people of Afghanistan, including efforts to protect the basic human rights of women and children; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the United States should support democratic processes in Afghanistan leading to a government which represents all its people, including women; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the people of Madison, in solidarity with the international community and in their capacity as citizens of the United States, will consider the Government of the United States responsible for both the direct consequences of its military actions in Afghanistan and for the results of its indifference to the priority of humanitarian concerns in Afghanistan and the surrounding region. Hi X and Policy folks - My general comments are:   1 - In addition to drafting this resolution, I'm guessing that you've thought a lot about strategy for getting it passed.  It WILL set off a firestorm, promoted by the State Journal and the radio shock-jocks with their newfound local political power.  You will definitely want to develop a full-court press on this in conjunction with friendly Alders.  One idea might be to send folks to the Common Council meeting PREVIOUS to the meeting at which you intend for this resolution to be introduced to demand an explanation as why the Common Council hasn't already acted.  Then you could get Alders to introduce it - in response - to the requests.   2 - The following are Progressive Dane Alderpeople.  We have 8 of 20 seats on the Common Council.  These are your most likely bets for sponsors of such a resolution.  Three of these are also Greens (Konkel, Powell, Jarrell). Senate Approves Broad Anti-Terrorism Legislation The U.S. Senate approved far-reaching anti-terrorism legislation late last night, rejecting efforts to limit the measure's impact on the privacy and civil liberties of American citizens.  The Uniting and Strengthening America Act (S. 1510) was the product of negotiations between the Justice Department and the Senate leadership. In an unusual departure from normal legislative procedure, the bill was sent directly to the full Senate without any debate or consideration by the Senate Judiciary Committee.  Sen. Russell Feingold (D-WI) and other colleagues, including Paul Wellstone (D-MI) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA), unsuccessfully attempted to have the Senate vote on three amendments designed to minimize the impact on civil liberties.  "What have we come to when we don't have either committee or Senate deliberation or amendments on an issue of this importance?" Feingold asked.  "Each of us cares as much as anyone in this room about the fight against terrorism, but we want to make sure we don't go beyond that goal and intrude on our civil liberties."  The unamended bill was approved by a 96-to-1 vote, with Feingold dissenting. The Senate bill contains most of the controversial provisions contained in the initial Justice Department anti-terrorism proposal, including: - Expansion of "pen register" authority to Internet communications, permitting law enforcement monitoring of "routing" and "addressing" information upon a mere showing of "relevance" to an investigation with virtually no judicial oversight.  This new authority will likely increase use of the FBI's Carnivore system. - Authorization of "roving wiretaps" for intelligence surveillance, allowing the issuance of "generic" court orders that could be served on any communications facility (including universities and public libraries) that a surveillance target might use. - Approval of government monitoring (without judicial authorization) of the communications of "computer trespassers," even in some circumstances where the affected user has permission to use the computer system. -  Authorization of searches without notification to the targeted individual ("secret searches"), in effect allowing police break-ins to private homes and offices. - Relaxation of existing limitations on the sharing of surveillance and other information between law enforcement and intelligence agencies, removing long- standing protections designed to prevent government investigative abuses. I think your suggestion has a lot of promise, X; however, I am concerned about coordinating it for this week's meeting.  I think if we do it, it might make more sense for this particular meeting to focus on the events coming up, rather than the general, sweeping tasks, like poster distribution or creation.  I think the events are more "gelling" as forces and focii to catch people's interest ("hey, I could work on that...") and to allow for communication, teamwork, etc.  It would be overwhelming for a group to discuss creating or distributing flyers for three events, while looking at the holistic effort for one event has a managability. If anyone likes this suggestion, that we (at least for this week) break into working groups based on event Nov 17, art auction, Nov 30, etc, etc, with perhaps the addition of the brochure or website improvement, I would be more than happy to facilitate the Nov 30 event group.  To tell you the truth, I'd feel pretty overhwhelmed myself to work on any of the other thematic groups you suggested --I'm game, but I wouldn't feel nearly as comfortable.  Feedback? ACTIVISM Never, Never, Never Give Up From war hero to pacifist Stephanie Salter, Chronicle Columnist    Sunday, November 4, 2001 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- During the year Charlie Liteky spent in Lompoc federal prison, he lost 26 pounds, marked his 70th birthday, listened to the life stories of inmates one- third his age and worshipped weekly in a Lakota Sioux sweatlodge. A former Catholic priest and Vietnam War hero, Liteky also did a great deal of reading about Dorothy Day, the founder of the Catholic Worker Movement and an outspoken pacifist until her death in 1980 at the age of 83. "I knew about her, of course, but I never realized the extent of her pacifism or how controversial it made her," said Liteky. "She remained a pacifist throughout World War II. It cost her a lot of friends and supporters even in her own movement. That's a kind of courage that's rare." Liteky knows more than the average person about courage -- and controversy. As an Army chaplain in Vietnam, he dragged 23 wounded soldiers to safety during a firefight in Ben Hoa province in 1967. For that he received the Medal of Honor, our nation's highest award for combat heroism. Twenty years later, married and no longer a priest, Liteky left his medal at the base of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington to protest U.S. aid to the Contras in Nicaragua. He'd already tried a 47-day, water-only fast on the steps of the Capitol with another vet. It left both of them near death. In 1990, Liteky and his wife, Judy, a former Catholic nun who had introduced Charlie to the world of peace activism, were drawn to small protests at the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Ga. A training ground for U.S.-backed Latin American warriors (and the occasional assassin and dictator), the school now attracts tens of thousands of protesters each November. Those who "cross the line" and trespass on the base are often arrested. The last time Charlie crossed, he was rewarded with a maximum sentence: two consecutive six-month terms in the Federal Correctional Institute at Lompoc. Fellow parishioners at the Litekys' San Francisco church, St. John of God, helped Judy finance monthly visits to the prison 30 miles north of Santa Barbara. A college math teacher, she became Charlie's eyes, ears and voice at School of the Americas protest rallies and fundraisers. Charlie spent his last 70 days in Lompoc in solitary because he refused to work for what he considers an immoral prison industry. Visits with Judy were brief and very public. She watched the relatives of other prisoners -- almost all of them young, in prison for drug-related crimes -- try to maintain some shred of family structure. "It's a shock," said Judy. "The parents, grandparents -- to see little kids waiting -- just the intensity of their bodies -- waiting for Dad to come out of this hallway from behind steel doors. I kept thinking: We can do better than this." Charlie was released in July. His plan, after a spate of speaking engagements, was to write a book about his year in prison in the context of all he has learned about U.S. foreign policy since Vietnam. Since Sept. 11, though, he has found it hard to make time for the book; his message of peaceful conflict resolution has taken on a whole new dimension. Questions from audiences are more confrontational and demanding. After a speech in Sacramento, where he spoke about struggling to respond to violence without violence, he wrote to President Bush. "I'd talked that night about my own arduous journey toward non-violence -- emotionally, spiritually, every way," he said. "I told the president that I hoped before he proceeded, he'd recall what we did in Vietnam, in Panama, all the innocent lives we've taken while seeking what we thought to be legitimate ends." Liteky asked Bush to ask himself if the United States was "in any way responsible" for the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, to remember that our economic sanctions alone "are starving 5,000 Iraqi kids to death each month." He also shared a major theme of his post-Sept. 11 message: "If there is any enemy here, it's violence. We need to protest and boycott violence because we eat, drink and sleep it in our country; we are entertained by it. If we don't stop, we're just going to join in an unending cycle of violence, like an escalator that keeps going up and up and up." On Nov. 16, the Litekys plan to travel to Fort Benning once again to protest the School of the Americas (now called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation). Neither intends to cross the line this year, but future arrests, especially for Charlie, are likely. "When I was in Lompoc, I was thinking maybe I could retire after my 70th birthday," Liteky said with a wry smile. "But then I look at Dorothy Day -- my God, I've got at least 10 more years to go." Dear WFA Colleagues, I agree with X that the bombing is not illegal, but I gather that on every other point I would agree with Heather. The bombing is legal under article 51 of the UN Charter. It is a fact that the United States was attacked and continues to be threatened, and consequently has the right to act in self defense. However from a practical and moral perspective the legality of bombing is not very important because it is viewed as illegitimate by many of the people who matter most in the countries where future terrorists are dedicating their lives to destroy America. Also it is essentially irrelevant to the objective of bringing bin Laden to justice or to the goal of combating terrorism; it is probably counterproductive with regard to both those aims. For every military target and Taliban soldier destroyed by the bombing, there are hundreds crossing into Afghanistan to help the Taliban because of the bombing. There could have been a better way to bring suspects to justice and to begin a campaign against terrorism. The Security Council could have acted under Chapter VII to set up its own multi-stage procedure. Ideally this would have started with representatives of the Secretary-General and the Organization of the Islamic Conference going to seek Afghan compliance with a demand to hand over bin Laden to a new ad hoc international tribunal in the Hague. If there were not compliance, then military action could have been taken by a UN Rapid Deployment Force, using US and UK air cover, but only in a very carefully targeted manner. This process might not have led to the capture of bin Laden, as the present process may not, but much less harm would have been done. People in Muslin countries can not be expected to see justice in an ultimatum by the United States to hand over bin Laden to a U.S. court. The government of Afghanistan did offer to hand him over to a third country if they could have been shown the evidence that he had caused the 9/11 attacks. If the whole procedure had been done through the UN, by the UN, it might or might not have worked, but certainly the legitimacy of international law would have been strengthened. The way it was done in the Security Council, in effect allowing the U.S. to take all necessary steps, was understandable in the wake of the horror of the assaults on the United States, but such carte blanche resolutions do not contribute to the credibility of the Security Council or to any form of solidarity between the major powers that prevail in the Council and the people and nations that view themselves as oppressed by Western hegemony.  I fear that we have added to a process that will deepen the divide between the rich and the poor, bringing new recruits to Al Queda to strengthen terrorism worldwide. I also fear that hatred of our actions and our power and our use of military power will weaken the stability of a number of countries; and while I have very little respect for the government of Saudi Arabia now, I would have even less for a Taliban-type government there. A true campaign against terrorism would address its causes and include many of the programs for strengthening global institutions and supporting sustainable development that world federalists have long favored. It would also focus on apprehending individuals, not states, in efforts to stop criminal actions. It would move beyond a state-centric interpretation of the rules of the Charter where collective security tends to mean war and collective retribution; world federalists insist on individual responsibility under international law. Because the views I have expressed outline a process for strengthening international institutions in a way that puts justice, equity and human rights before the state-centric legalities of the present UN system, I think such views should be seen as representing the main stream of world federalist thinking. However, clearly there can be different views and different streams of thought within our movement. Also, it is valuable for the process of bringing more people to our views that we have a positive attitude toward the fact that the GW Bush Administration is coming to see the limits of unilateralism and the importance of friends in diverse nations. It is disturbing when the same government that is encouraging all of us to get on with our normal lives is hard at work making sure that things will never be the same in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and subsequent anthrax scare. Disturbing, not surprising. Some of the changes would erode our sense of privacy and freedom, and some would have real economic impacts on businesses that folks have fostered on the Internet and elsewhere. Deep in the heart of the 'Oxley bill' is a provision to allow law enforcement to open and inspect any international mail without a warrant. A couple of weeks ago, a colleague joked that it wouldn't be long before the government decided that it needed to open our personal mail to "protect us." At about the same time, a proposal to do pretty much that was making its way through our House of Representativesthe workplace of the good folks who asked us to get on with our lives while they quit early and high-tailed it out of D.C. at the first hint of anthrax in stone city. Deep in the heart of the "Oxley bill"which is the short name for the Financial Anti-Terrorism Act of 2001are provisions to allow law enforcement to poke around in heretofore personal and private financial information; to take cash from anyone who can't immediately explain where they got it; to eliminate any expectation of privacy in any international monetary transaction; and to, gasp, open and inspect any international mail without a warrant. In addition to raising the hackles of folks such as the American Civil Liberties Union, the proposal gets a thumbs-down from U.S. Postal officials. "For the first time in America's 225-year history, [this] would allow sealed, outbound international mail to be stopped and searched at the border without a warrant. There is no evidence that eroding these long established privacy protections will bring any significant law enforcement improvements over what is achieved using existing, statutorily approved law enforcement techniques," postal officials wrote Congress in regard to the Oxley bill. If that weren't enough, the Oxley bill, as proposed, would take a bite out of one of the few enterprises making money on the Internet today. Now I understand that casino gambling on the Net already violates federal and most state laws, but the impossibility of enforcement has made it one of the Web's entrepreneurial bright spots. And with gamblers reluctant to jet off to Vegas or Atlantic City, online gaming was poised to have a banner year, even if most of the money is being collected on small, rocky islands in the Atlantic. But the Oxley bill would put a major kink in the ability of these offshore to accept credit card and wire-transfer funds. Without them, they're cooked. No surprise that in addition to the gamers and the tech companies that support them, the Oxley bill is being met with vocal opposition from the credit card companies. Vice is vice, but like the Post Office's argument against tearing open international mail, nobody has yet connected the dots between the legislation and the terrorism we all loathe. How will nixing online gambling make us safer? The Financial Anti-Terrorism Act of 2001 breezed through the House and reportedly has strong support in the Senate. If it were the only attempt to change our definition of a free and open society, it would be bad enough. But it isn't. As eWEEK has reported, the euphemistically titled Uniting and Strengthening America Act of 2001 encapsulates the best of lawmakers' intentions with the worst of law enforcement expansions. With it, the FBI would have access to just about anything it wants as long as investigators say it has some foreign intelligence value. Judges will be powerless to do anything but issue an order when asked by federal investigators. Scary. I expect I was one of many persons who received last week a revised copy of my employer's policy for use of their computers and networksalong with a rundown of how they would check on me to make sure I was complying. I don't have a big problem with the warning that I'm about to be Carnivorized, but it did give me pause to think about what's been lost since the world changed six weeks ago. I never spent much time thinking about the search terms I plugged into my Google toolbar. Now I do. A second or two. Multiplied by 7,500 times a day, that comes to... a change in my life I could have done without.
