Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a dishwasher in one of the restaurants destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. One's salary should not be measure of one's human worth. The children and spouses of victims who were financially comfortable are most likely covered by generous life insurance policies, and the families of firefighters most certainly are (rightly so). However, the families of wage earners were likely living from paycheck to paycheck, even before the disaster, and may now be in dire straits with the loss of even a few paychecks. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same. This victims fund is a black mark against our country and every taxpaying citizen!!! Why is our government making millionaires out of victims families??? My mother died of cancer a few years ago on May 31st, since she didn't live until June 1st (2 more hours) her May SS check was revoked. How does one policy match the other. This was a tragic event against our nation and every American, we have joblessness, economic slowdown, investigation costs and other. The RED CROSS and United Way collected $$$$$$$$$$$$ for the victims families, let them compensate, that is what they are for. Our government is not there to make life fair and reward those who lost a relative. Will these people still get SS checks for their children? Will they receive other government benefits already in place? Or will this be a one time and quit asking the government for more handouts deal? Thursday, March 21, 2002 5:34 PM Compensation for domestic partner spouses As a physician and an insurance agent, we wish to go on record to protest the failure of the 9/11 fund to cover domestic partners and co-parented children of those who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks. First, two of the affected cities, New York and San Francisco, have for many years had legal status for registered domestic partners. In New York, where we are registered domestic partners, both gay people and heterosexuals may register their partnership, as long as they live together and are not married to anyone else. So for victims from those cities, there is legal precedent. Additionally, many employers nationwide have insurance coverage for domestic partners, and the biological or adopted offspring of domestic partners. They realize what you do not: that it is the right thing to do. Love makes a family. No family should suffer when the breadwinner dies. When we walked the streets of New York in those first terrible days and looked at the pictures of the missing, so many of them were under the age of 40. Many were in their 20s. We had not made a will, when we were that age. These young people did not expect to die in an act of terrorism. They are not to be blamed for not protecting their families.
