I would support this. In fact, I wonder if we could put this
on in conjunction with some other resources who could discuss
Iraq issues and perhaps Afghan women's issues... maybe take the
opportunity to discuss "the Broadening War." A 45 minute opportunity
is good, and maybe an afternoon or evening with a somewhat broader
program would be even better!
The following from The Observer's 9/30 article on "infinite War"
bears thinking about:
"The plans put before the President during the past few days
involve expanding the war beyond Afghanistan to include similar
incursions by special ops forces - followed by air strikes by
the bombers they would guide - into Iraq, Syria and the Beqaa
Valley area of Lebanon, where the Syrian-backed Hizbollah (Party
of God) fighters that harass Israel are based.
In Iraq, any site suspected of being a chemical weapons facility
or proliferation plant of any threatening kind would be bombed,
in an escalation of the almost weekly current harassment of Iraqi
installations by British and US fighter jets.
In Syria and Lebanon, as in Afghanistan, special ops would guide
air strikes, and also be called on to mount guerrilla-style raids
on training camps and to carry out assassinations. While a presidential
executive order - which Bush is under pressure to revoke - bans
overseas assassinations, the Pentagon points out that the US
can act as it pleases in self-defence. If action in Lebanon led
to an Israeli reinvasion of the southern part of the country,
it would be supported by the US.
Asked whether the Hamas organisation on the West Bank and in
Gaza would be too controversial for inclusion among possible
targets, one source said: 'never say never'."

Hello,
I know many people are worried about the "law and order"
response to the Peace Parade scheduled for this coming Sat. (11/17)
at 12:00 Noon outside the gates of Truax Air Force Base near MATC in
Madison. It is hard to predict what will happen. Having been in
lots of protests, I tend to prepare for the worst and I would
encourage others to do the same. No matter what we call the event -
parade, vigil, protest, march, memorial, etc. etc. - the reaction may
be exactly the same by the police.
In terms of direct action, I agree with many others that the
"least threatening" tactics are preferable. Personally, I'm not in
favor of blocking the gates, climbing the fence, or otherwise
creating a situation where authorities feel compelled to respond
and/or arrest people. Of course, they could still pepperspray
someone for merely carrying a bouquet of flowers - such are the times
we live in...
At any rate, three relatively "mellow" and somewhat "fun" direct
action tactics people have been tossing around for Saturday's event
include:
1.) Decorating the fence with statements of resistance, demands for
peace, etc. etc. - this could include poems, quotes, balloons, paper
cranes, posters, large photos of Afghani children, etc. etc. This
tactic worked very well in Quebec at the FTAA protests and got a lot
of media coverage.
2.) Mock minefield with similar looking "cluster bombs" and "food
packages" strewn along the roadside and entrance that people could
pick up and discover their fate by reading the explanation on the
bottom. The UW Greens in conjunction with the International Campaing
to Ban Landmines has done similar mock minefields on UW Library Mall
with a good public response.
3.) Propaganda flights with people making paper "F-16s" out of copies
of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, Geneva Convention, photos of
refugees, etc. etc. and tossing them over the fence. This tactic has
been used by solidarity groups - a common nickname is the "Zapatista
Airforce."
At any rate, these "mild" direct action tactics (and possible
others) I hope can be discussed at the Student Youth Caucus meeting
tonight and at the full MAPC meeting tomorrow. Hopefully, there is
enough space and trust within the coalition umbrella for such
activities to occur.

Hi. I have put together a mini-list of the 5 or 6 women who responded to my
post on SWS wanting to know about upcoming peace actions in nyc. i put it
together as a 'group' in my addressbook, so i have no idea what would happen
if one of you tried to reply-all. it might work or you might get a lot of
error messages back.
anyway, this is what I currently know. please pass along any other info in
circulation.
1. there are two coalitions currently operating, and some move to bring them
together. One group has been meeting at an alternative space in lower
manhattan, Charas, and the other began at the Brecht Forum this past
saturday. more news in the future on those.
2. if/when the US initiates military action, there will be a peace vigil
from 4-7pm in Times Square. so if it starts at night, the vigil will be at
4pm the next day. if it starts in the morning, the vigil will begin that
afternoon. I think this is sponsored by the Charas group.
3. Arab American communities in NYC are experience assault. In Brooklyn,
the Arab American Family Services Center hgas been trying to organize a
response. they can be reached at x@x.x or xxx-xxx-xxxx. x for
Racial and Economic Justice at xxx-xxx-xxxx is also a good source of
information on this, as they are gearing up for solidarity work.
4. Sunday 9/23 is busy -
Al Awda, a Palestinian organization supporting the Right to Return, is
holding a forum to protest anti-arab racism at the Abyssinian Baptist
Church, time tba. check website www.alawda.org for more info
a group of Jewish activists will be holding a community tashlich service
at 12:30 at 83rd street and the Hudson River. this will be oriented around
protesting the continuing israeli occupation, in light of recent events.

there will be a contingent of peace activists at the city memorial
service at 3pm in Central Park. i have not heard of any meeting palce set
up yet, but the tashlich group will be leaving around 2pm to go over to the
memorial to be peace presence. so you could connect with that group at 2 by
the river.
5. the 9/29 anti-IMF rally has be transformed into a peace demonstration in
Washington DC, called by the anti-globalization folks. X at

and Badger Herald attended. So six of the 12 chairs set up for
press were filled by the press, and two more were filled by some
peace movement people who showed up in solidarity. X and
I were there to set up and coordinate. X, X, X,
X, and X spoke and answered questions.
X and X represented MAPC very well.
We are planning a press release for next week Wednesday or Thursday
to prepare for the 17th.
We have sent Fast information to around 100 church bulletins
through Madison Urban Ministry.
X (who pronounces her last name with a French
accent) will represent Media this week at the coordcom meeting.
I overspent on the Isthmus ad in order to guarantee placement
on page five. Ad cost $435. You can tell me to eat the overage
if you must, but it seemed like the right thing to do. Ad will
appear in the 11/15 Isthmus.
In addition to writing a lot of releases and rewriting some others,
X has produced a lot of photocopied material on Afghanistan.
Some of it is in the press kits we prepared for today's news
conference. I think it would be nice if X or X had a copy
of the press kit along to pass around and share what we gave
the media today (X did a lot of the copy work and all the
folder preparation on these).
X is following up on X instructions that we
get stuff on the Insurgent Radio Kiosk and a couple other bulletin
boards.
We've been really busy the last few weeks and I think it's starting
to show in the media.

Title: Humanitarian Priorities in Afghanistan
A RESOLUTION regarding the urgent need to provide emergency humanitarian
assistance and development assistance to civilians in Afghanistan, including
Afghan refugees in surrounding countries.
WHEREAS, a disastrous humanitarian crisis is underway, with an estimated 7.5
million people in Afghanistan facing critical food shortage or outright
starvation this winter; and
WHEREAS, 70 percent of these people are women and children, and the UN
estimates 400,000 children under five will likely die this year, an increase
of 100,000 over last year; and
WHEREAS, food aid shipments have been disrupted because of U.S. bombing in
Afghanistan; and
WHEREAS, the aid agencies active in the region, including the Nobel laureate
Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Oxfam International and the World Food
Program have stated that the U.S. food drops can not meet the increasing and
urgent need for assistance; and
WHEREAS, Madison now participates directly and indirectly in U.S. military
efforts through many channels, including the federal taxes its citizens pay,
and through its citizens' participation in the armed forces; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and Madison Common Council are appalled at the mass
starvation that will result from these actions to which they are a party if
the situation is not speedily addressed; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and Madison Common Council deplore the dishonor such an
outcome would be for the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11th;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Mayor and Madison Common Council
support a resolution to the situation that minimizes loss of life; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT humanitarian concerns must now be a top priority
for U.S. policy toward Afghanistan, especially as there exists a narrow
window of opportunity for supplying food to the region's population before
winter makes this difficult or impossible. The Mayor and Madison Common
Council call on the federal government to defer to the judgement of
international aid agencies that a cessation in bombing is necessary to avoid
humanitarian disaster; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Mayor and Madison Common Council call on
Afghanistan's neighbors to immediately reopen their borders to allow for the
safe passage of refugees, and call on the U.S. federal government and other
members of the international community to prepare to contribute to the
economic costs incurred by the flight of desperate Afghan civilians; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Mayor and Madison Common Council call on the
U.S. federal government to actively support the work of various agencies to
deliver assistance in Afghanistan, particularly through overland truck
convoys, and to support safe humanitarian access to affected populations, in

alleviate a large scale humanitarian catastrophe; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Mayor and Madison Common Council call on the
U.S. federal government to contribute to efforts by the international
community to provide long-term, sustainable reconstruction and development
assistance for the people of Afghanistan, including efforts to protect the
basic human rights of women and children; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Mayor and Madison Common Council call on the
international community to support democratic processes in Afghanistan
leading to a government which represents all its people, including women.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Mayor and Madison Common Council, on behalf
of the people of Madison, in solidarity with the international community and
in their capacity as citizens of the United States, urge the U.S. federal
government to put humanitarian concerns first in its policies and actions

Folks -
Please read the following message before circulating any further the piece about Nancy Oden being detained at an airport in Maine. The facts in the case are unclear - and we've decided to withhold any judgment about the case until we can get to the bottom of it. Appearances are that the incident has been way overblown. This said, the police riot in Hartford last week was a fairly serious incident, and very well-documented, and clearly DID target Green Party leadership in town, as well as other organizers in the local movement.
Anyway, here's an alternative point of view from Walt Sheasby, a California Green:
The Nov. 3 article from the Bangor Daily News seems to
establish that Nancy Oden was not targetted because of
having been flagged in a computer search. If that were the
case, it would have profound consequences, and the small
incident at the Bangor airport would be a harbinger of an
even worse stampede toward a police state than Bush and
the Republicrats have urged.
The exaggeration of the hassle caused by Nancy Oden's
apparent ire at being screened (something we all sympathize
with) into a case of being apprehended by a computer plugged
into the FBI's Most Wanted List of terrorists and their supporters
is indefensible, and the GPUSA owes an apology to all anti-war
groups. Crying "wolf!" in these difficult times is very irresponsible.
As far as is known at this time, no U.S. anti-war or anti-globalization
have been put on the list created by the FBI for the Patriot Act
implementation.
A similar alarmist report to GPUSA's has been made recently that
the "Anarchist Faction" has been targeted on the new list. Actually,
this is a specific group in Greece which has been responsible for
bombings and assassinations. They have nothing whatsoever to do
with the anti-capitalist globalization protests. The full and proper
name of the group is "The Anarchist Faction for Subversion."
The Patriot Act must be repealed, and the left must unify in demanding
this from our representatives in Congress. But exaggeration has never
been of any help, and paranoia only serves the cause of the "terrorists"
holed up at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Together we can smoke them
from their cave, and that means a united campaign for the Presidency
in 2004 by the Green Party of the United States and its supporters.
And in 2002 there must be hundreds of anti-war candidates running as
Greens. This will be our best chance to turn around public opinion and
make sure that it is the hawks of war who are targeted as Public
Enemies.

LEADER OF GREEN SPLINTER GROUP FIBS ABOUT AIRPORT HASSLE
In an official press release from its Chicago headquarters, the Greens/Green
Party USA, a small splinter group that opposes recognition of the Green Party
of the United States as the electoral voice of the movement that ran Ralph
Nader for President in 2000, declared that one of its leaders was stopped
from boarding a flight after a check turned up her name was on a computer
list because the organization opposes the U.S. bombing of Afhanistan. The
release said:
<Armed government agents grabbed Nancy Oden, Green Party USA
coordinating committee member, Thursday at Bangor International Airport
in Bangor Maine, as she attempted to board an American Airlines flight to
Chicago.
"An official told me that my name had been flagged in the computer," a
shaken Oden said. "I was targeted because the Green Party USA opposes
the bombing of innocent civilians in Afghanistan.">
The press release was relayed around the nation as a first signal of the reach
of the new draconian Patriot Act. But it turns out that Nancy Oden was
apparently not barred because of a computer check, but because she did
not comply with standard screening for weapons. While who said what is
not clear, it appears that her name was not flagged by a computer search
of potential terrorists or their supporters, according to a news report
in the Bangor Daily News on Nov. 3.
While the undue harassment of airline travelers is to be condemned, it does
not seem that this incident warrants fears of a major violation of Constitutional
guarantees of free speech, as it first appeared. The group that Nancy Oden
leads is nevertheless using the incident to draw attention and support to itself.
One member of the group's National Council urged:
<The first thing to do is to organize a committee, include spokesperson/
spokespersons. Contact civil liberties organizations including the National
Lawyers Guild, the ACLU ... Ask organizaitons to sponsor defense
committee- Seek prominent attorney who may need to have a license to
practice in Maine- Send releases out every day. Has Ralph Nader been
contacted? What about Phil Donahue CONTACT TALK SHOWS. TRY
TO GET POLITICIANS TO SUPPORT, Barbara Lee. Organizations in
Maine who know Nancy and will back her up.>
If the incident had taken place as Nancy Oden described it, it would mean
that other Green activists and leaders of other anti-war groups would also
be on computer lists and barred from flying, which reportedly has not been
the case. The exaggeration of her victimization may only serve to discredit
opposition to the Bush Administration's attack on civil liberties.
It may also further isolate the Green Party USA, which saw a majority of
delegates at its July 20 National Convention leave to form a new Green
Alliance, which has its first convention in New Orleans January 18-21.

BANGOR â¤" Green Party activist Nancy Oden was grounded at Bangor
International Airport on Thursday after reportedly becoming uncooperative
when she was targeted for additional screening.
Oden, who said she believed she was singled out for extra scrutiny because
of her activist past and public opposition to the current war effort, was
on her way to Chicago to attend a Green Party USA meeting when airline
personnel told her that she had been selected to undergo added security
screening before boarding.
â¤oeI was treated if I were guilty just because Iâ¤(tm)m a dissident and I speak
out,â¤? Oden, a middle-aged woman who sits on the partyâ¤(tm)s national
coordinating committee, said from her Jonesboro home after she had
abandoned her travel plans. â¤oeTheyâ¤(tm)re looking at me like Iâ¤(tm)m a terrorist and
Iâ¤(tm)m just a peaceful person trying to go to a meeting in Chicago.â¤?
Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, security has been tightened at all
the nationâ¤(tm)s airports â¤" including BIA, where armed National Guardsmen
monitor the screening area and passenger lists are checked against the
FBIâ¤(tm)s terrorist watch list.
Officials at BIA and American Eagle Airlines have a much different account
of Odenâ¤(tm)s afternoon run-in with the added security.
â¤oeShe was uncooperative during the screening process,â¤? said American Eagle
spokesman Kurt Iverson, who added that Oden reportedly would not stand
still when security staff tried to wave a metal-detecting wand over her.
â¤oeObviously if they canâ¤(tm)t submit to screening, [Federal Aviation
Administration] regulations require that they not be allowed to board the
plane.�
Oden said that while she asked security staff not to touch her with the
wand, she did allow them to complete their search of both her person and
her baggage. Oden said that she did pull away from a National Guardsman
when he grabbed her left arm and asked her if she â¤oeknew what happened on
September 11,� she said.
While acknowledging that Oden was singled out for added extensive
screening, authorities said it was more likely due to the manner in which
she purchased her ticket than for her activist past. Under newly adopted
FAA regulations, more passengers â¤" either randomly or based on a
computerized profile â¤" are being targeted for more intense screening
during the boarding process.
While industry officials were unwilling to release the criteria under which
they would profile a passenger, they said the criteria did not include
federally protected characteristics such as race, religion, age or sex.
Without providing details, interim airport director Rebecca Hupp said that
the FAA guidelines â¤oehave more to do with the ticket than the person.â¤? For
instance, one airline official said, a passenger who pays cash for a ticket
the day of the flight would likely undergo added scrutiny. Oden bought her nonrefundable ticket online, she said.
While an FBI spokeswoman would neither confirm nor deny the presence of
any name on the terrorist watch list â¤" another trigger for added security
response â¤" one law enforcement source said it was â¤oeextremely unlikelyâ¤?
Oden was on the list of potential terrorists because her name is unknown to
the FBI.
After the incident, Oden was told she could not take her scheduled flight
to Chicago, and that she could not travel on any other airline at the
airport that day.

Dear Friends:
A great tragedy has befallen our nation. A catastrophe that leaves none of our lives untouched. Many innocent lives were lost due to a senseless act of terror and violence. Although this horriffic event may outrage many, and rightly so, it cannot be justified or corrected through more violence. Another senseless act in retaliation will not repair the damage done, nor bring back those who were lost. It will only perpetuate a violent, barbaric cycle fueled by hatred and ignorance. The perpetrators of these crimes must be caught and brought
to justice, but without the continued loss of innocent life.
President Bush,
We the undersigned encourage you to take responsible, peaceful action
in bringing the terrorists to justice. Please seriously consider the

I agree with x on this one. I was referring to this deployment when I
spoke during our last general body meeting. This is nothing new, they've
been doing this for the last week or so. This, in my opinion, does not
constitute "ground troops" involvement. The troops that are on the ground
now are simply preparing the terrain for the deployment of ground troops,
which will probably be green berets.
I'm sorry this is so confusing, but that's the nature of the situation.
Most newspapers are reporting today's news as "preparation for ground war,"
not the actual start of it. I would hold off on this one for now.

PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: Time to check in with ambassador-in- residence,
Richard Butler, this morning. An explosive new book published in France
alleges that the United States was in negotiations
to do a deal with the Taliban for an oil pipeline in Afghanistan.
Joining us right now is Richard Butler to shed some light on this new
book. He is the former chief U.N. weapons inspector. He is now on the
Council on Foreign Relations and our own ambassador-in-residence -- good
morning.
RICHARD BUTLER, FMR. U.N. WEAPONS INSPECTOR: Good morning, Paula.
ZAHN: Boy, if any of these charges are true...
BUTLER: If...
ZAHN: ... this...
BUTLER: Yes.
ZAHN: ... is really big news.
BUTLER: I agree.
ZAHN: Start off with what your understanding is of what is in this book
-- the most explosive charge.
BUTLER: The most explosive charge, Paula, is that the Bush administration --
the present one -- just shortly after assuming office, slowed down FBI
investigations of al Qaeda and terrorism in Afghanistan in order to do a
deal with the Taliban on oil -- an oil pipeline across Afghanistan.
ZAHN: And this book points out that the FBI's deputy director, John
O'Neill, actually resigned because he felt the U.S. administration was
obstructing...
BUTLER: A proper...
ZAHN: ... the prosecution of terrorism.
BUTLER: Yes, yes, a proper intelligence investigation of terrorism. Now,
you said if, and I affirmed that in responding to you. We have to be
careful here. These are allegations. They're worth airing and talking
about, because of their gravity. We don't know if they are correct. But I
believe they should be investigated, because Central Asian oil, as we were
discussing yesterday, is potentially so important. And all prior attempts to
have a pipeline had to be done through Russia. It had to be negotiated with
Russia.
Now, if there is to be a pipeline through Afghanistan, obviating the need to
deal with Russia, it would also cost less than half of what a pipeline
through Russia would cost. So financially and politically, there's a big
prize to be had. A pipeline through Afghanistan down to the Pakistan coast
would bring out that Central Asian oil easier and more cheaply.
ZAHN: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) as you spoke about this yesterday, we almost
immediately got a call from "The New York Times."
BUTLER: Right.
ZAHN: They want you to write an op-ed piece on this over the weekend.
BUTLER: Right, and which I will do.
ZAHN: But let's come back to this whole issue of what John O'Neill, this
FBI agent...
BUTLER: Right.
ZAHN: ... apparently told the authors of this book. He is alleging that --
what -- the U.S. government was trying to protect U.S. oil interests? And at
the same time, shut off the investigation of terrorism to allow for that to
happen?
BUTLER: That's the allegation, that instead of prosecuting properly an
investigation of terrorism, which has its home in Afghanistan as we now
know, or one of its main homes, that was shut down or slowed down in order
to pursue oil interests with the Taliban. The people who we have now bombed
out of existence, and this not many months ago. The book says that the
negotiators said to the Taliban, you have a choice. You have a carpet of
gold, meaning an oil deal, or a carpet of bombs. That's what the book
alleges.
ZAHN: Well, I know you're going to be doing your own independent homework on
this...
BUTLER: Yes.
ZAHN: ... to see if you can confirm any of this. Let's move on to the
whole issue of Iraq. The deputy defense secretary, Paul Wolfowitz, at one
time was considered one of those voices within the administration...
BUTLER: Yes.
ZAHN: ... that was pushing for moving beyond Afghanistan. He seemed to
back off a little from that yesterday.
BUTLER: Yes.
ZAHN: What do you read through the tea leaves here?
BUTLER: A very interesting report that the administration will focus on
the Philippines, Yemen, Somalia as places where there are al Qaeda cells.
But the word Iraq wasn't used by the man who was the chief hawk -- used as
a, you know, as a future target. So what I interpret from that is this: That
very likely our allies have been saying to us, this is too hard. This is
really serious. Be careful. Saddam is essentially contained at the moment.
Don't start, you know, a bigger problem either in the Arab world or in the
coalition by going after him. And Wolfowitz, it seems, has probably accepted
that.
ZAHN: A quick thought on the Israelis intercepting this latest armed
shipment? What that means? You've got to do it in about 15 seconds.
BUTLER: It's extraordinarily serious, because it seems to have been tied
to Yasser Arafat himself. It needs to be further investigated, but you know,
Paula, the potentiality that this could once again prove an impediment to
resume peace negotiations is really quite serious.
ZAHN: Thank you as usual for covering so much territory. Richard Butler,
see you same time, same place tomorrow morning.

I'd just add that Holtom's broader description has a deeper more fundamental
appeal and probably captures, on a subliminal level, the imagination of
those of us who who find power in the symbol: "Gerald Holtom, a
conscientious objector who had worked on a farm in Norfolk
during the Second World War, explained that the symbol incorporated the
semaphore letters N(uclear) and D(isarmament). He later wrote to Hugh Brock,
editor of Peace News, explaining the genesis of his idea in greater, more
personal depth:
"I was in despair. Deep despair. I drew myself: the representative of an
individual in despair, with hands palm outstretched outwards and downwards
in the manner of Goyas peasant before the firing squad. I formalised the
drawing into a line and put a circle round it."
"X added his own interpretation of the design: 'the gesture of
despair had long been associated with the death of Man and the circle with
the unborn child.'"

Folks:
Just wanted to let you know that I have talked to the reservations
person for Memorial Union, Union So., and the Red Gym. If we are
sponsored by a student organization on campus, we can use spaces in
any of those facilities without charge. The person I originally
spoke to hadn't mentioned that as an option.
I also contacted X of the UW Greens, and the Greens are
willing to be the student organization on campus to "sponsor" MAPC
events. If we can target a few dates that might work, I can check on
accomodations. We could have used Tripp Commons Saturday, but not
until 2:30p.m.. It would be nice to be able to plan without weather
concerns, but then we need to estimate approximately how many people
may attend in order to reserve enough space. Maybe we could reserve
Tripp commons and spill out onto the terrace if the weather
permits... It would also be great to use Peace Park for some shorter
events (due to cold.) With the planning committee considering it's
future, we could show them it can be put to good use as is.
I will also ask the DJ's at WORT to announce the cancellation
whenever there is an opportunity Thursday- Saturday.
For those who posted signs, it might be a good idea to tack a
bright-colored note about the cancellation, or just write on the
original poster. Hopefully not too many will actually venture to the
mall Saturday, especially if the weather is discouraging.
X, I will volunteer to share representing the arts & cultural
committee with X. Sorry we ran into this snag just when you
had a lot of other things going on.

I would like to request that the issues of (1) International Solidarity, and (2) the workload of some committees be put on the agenda.
There has been some discussion of having another committee, International Solidarity. Someone said that this is the responsibility of the Education/Outreach committee, and the suggestion thereby died. If I might respectfully disagree, I think this should be discussed.
I am not a member of that committee, but it would seem that the Education/Outreach committee has a mighty full plate. In addition to producing literature, helping to produce teach-ins and other educational activities, they are the committee charged with outreach to the rest of the community (networking is a full-time job in itself), and recruiting members of specific communities to increase the diversity of MAPC (this is also critical, time-consuming work). And then, some weeks ago, when a couple of folks volunteered to assemble names for a Speakers' Bureau, they were told that this, also, is part of the E/O's work. With all due respect, that is a great deal of work for a committee of volunteers. We do not need to burn people out. Let's divide some of this work up.
Secondly, the proposal of a fast is a terrific idea, IF we can get good mainstream** media coverage. It would be a shame to have folks making such a huge sacrifice if that effort were to go unnoticed by the larger community.
