>Subject: [MAPC-Announce] International Committee
>Date: Thu, 8 Nov 2001 01:11:05 -0600
>
>I apologize for the gap in time since the meeting last week - my hard drive
>couldn't take the volume of emails since 911 and bombed itself back to the
>stone age. Several things are irretrievable, including a couple of email
>addresses given to me after the Tuesday 10/27 general meeting. I am sorry
>if I am missing some folks.
>
>The International Committee (name in process) was formed at the October 27
>general meeting. the focus of the group will be to bring Central Asian
>voices to the Madison area, coordinate humanitarian aid, coordinate local
>participation in international days of action, provide a liaison to
>national/international organizing efforts, track international response to
>US actions, communicate an American viewpoint different from the official
>government/corporate/media response, and to promote international solutions
>for international problems.
>
>That's ambitious, and we need your help.
>
>Please e-mail me at X if you are interested in joining
>this committee. We are considering an alternate Tuesday meeting time, in
>the weeks when MAPC is not meeting. Is this a good time for you who are
>interested?
>
>We are looking forward to a lot of exciting projects.
>
>Peace,
>
>X
>
>

> >
> >
> >X,
> >Didn't mean to bust you on that, but I've heard it both ways
> >with no ethnic sensitivity...
> >
> >"Afghanistan is a land of many ethnic groups, hence many languages.
> >The biggest ethnic group is the Pashtuns, who speak a language
> >called Pashto. Accounts vary as to whether the Pashtuns still
> >constitute an outright majority of the Afghan population. But
> >Pashtun kings ruled Afghanistan (often under heavy British influence)
> >more or less continuously from its founding in 1780 until 1973,
> >when King Zahir Shah was ousted and exiled to Italy. The second-largest
> >ethnic group in Afghanistan is the Tajiks, who speak a variant
> >of Farsi called Dari. Today, Pashto and Dari are the twin official
> >languages of Afghanistan (although many other ethnic groups
>speak
> >many other languages).
> >
> >In Pashto, the word for Afghan is something that sounds very
> >like "Afghan." But in Dari, the word for Afghan is something
> >that sounds very like "Afghani." The same is true in Urdu, which
> >is also spoken in Afghanistan."
> >
> >The above was lifted from Slate on-line, and I'm sorry I can't
> >credit the author.
> >
> >Basically I'm sure you're right. "Afghani" sounds like such
> >an authentic formation that I wouldn't have thought to question
> >it. And it can't hurt the Madison Area Peace Coalition to remain
> >sensitive to what others would like to hear us call them in
>English!
> > I hope you'll attend the news conference in the Assembly Parlor
> >tomorrow at 10am.

> >
> >>X,
> >>
> >>ooops ! caught red handed padding my sources. I actually have
> >
> >>heard only one person explicitly complain about this and I
>don't
> >
> >>know her name she was in the audience at either the Central
> >Asian
> >>Seminar I went to at Lowell Hall a couple of weeks ago or the
> >
> >>workshop on the Taliban at the South Asian conference also
>a
> >few
> >>weeks agao at Lowell . She identified herself not as an Afghan
> >
> >>actually but as being PHD student from Baluchistan , a region
> >and
> >>ethinc group that includes people and land in both Pakistan
> >and
> >>Afghanistan. Neither the Afghan who spoke at the South Asian
> >
> >>conference, Zalmay Gulzad ,a professor from Loyola nor the
>
> >>Afghan human rights activist Belquis Ahmadi who spoke this
> >week
> >>on campus used Afghani to refer to the people from their native
> >
> >>land. Both used both of the two alternatives I suggested.
> >>
> >>Hope this suffices. I am convinced my unidentified source-
>that
> >
> >>Baluchi(sic) woman- is reliable.
> >>
> >>This reminds me of the flap I got into recently over the London
> >
> >>Independent's report on specific terrorist threats in Wisconsin.
> > The
> >>reporter Andy Gumble I talked to would not identify his source
> >but
> >>insisted he/she was reliable. The best he could do was tell
> >me
> >>he/she "works with the federal government in a position that
> >would
> >>have access to this information" .
> >>
> >>So take it with a grain of salt. I do know that the currency
> >is
> >>"Afghani". That you can look up yourself from financial sources
> >on
> >>the web.

> >>X,
> >>Thanks for the input. I'll be the first to admit that I lack
> >>cultural competence as far as ethnic nomenclature in the peoples
> >>of central and southern Asia. Just to satisy an old journalist's
> >>curiousity regarding second sourcing the valuable insight you've
> >>provided, would you mind sharing the names and contact info
> >of
> >>some of
> >>the several Afghan people you have heard from? Frank

> >>>Dear Friends,
> >>>
> >>>This is just a friendly correction. I have noticed the use
> >of
> >>the word
> >>>"Afghani" in some of your leaflets , in particular the Truax
> >>Demo
> >>>one . This in incorrect and I have heard several Afghan people
> >>
> >>>complain about this usage over the past month . Afghani is
> >what
> >>
> >>>the paper currency used in the county is called. Please try
> >>to use
> >>>Afghan or Afghans, or "the people of Afganistan ' in future
> >>printed
> >>>material.

Outies,

Please take note of the following terminology corrections. I see each
committee who has put up postings, wiki pages, and/or created leaflets
should correct their own documents.

>X,
> >Thanks for the input. I'll be the first to admit that I lack
>cultural competence as far as ethnic nomenclature in the peoples
>of central and southern Asia. Just to satisy an old journalist's
>curiousity regarding second sourcing the valuable insight you've
>provided, would you mind sharing the names and contact info of
>some of the several Afghan people you have heard from?

> >>Dear Friends,
> >>
> >>This is just a friendly correction. I have noticed the use
>of the word
> >>"Afghani" in some of your leaflets , in particular the Truax
>Demo
> >>one . This in incorrect and I have heard several Afghan people
>
> >>complain about this usage over the past month . Afghani is
>what
> >>the paper currency used in the county is called. Please try
>to use
> >>Afghan or Afghans, or "the people of Afganistan ' in future
>printed
> >>material.
> >>

Would it be appropriate for Outreach to follow up on leads like this? It
sounds like they may desire a little personal encouragement and additional
information about joining.

>
>To everyone,
>
> I did not know who to send this e-mail to hence I picked three people
>at
>MAPC.
> I thought you might want to know that the Libertarian Party of Dane
>County is also against the war. Although most of their political views do
>not match those of the member organisations of MAPC, it might be possible
>to
>include them, if they are interested. The more the merrier?
> The head of the Libertarian Party of Dane County is x and
>his phone number is x. x is a friend of mine and he may be
>interested in joining MAPC.
> Also, checkout a good Libertarian web site about the war: HREF="http://antiwar.com/">Antiwar.com .
>
> Sincerely,
> x

hey x, this is x. i attended last nights meeting. green sweatshirt, glasses... i was late . i am totally new to this type of work and this is my first e message. i am working on lining up a woman to speak for MAPC at the event we discussed last night. she worked for the Quakers at an independent aid station in viet nam during the war and has been practicing zen budhism for over 25 years. right now she directs the dept of physical therapy at Meriter Hospital. i called her last night and she would be happy to speak, she is, however, a cautious woman and wishes to know more about MAPC and its ideas and perhaps, about some of its members. So, other than our website ( which i haven't been to yet) might you have any ideas about ways we can assure her that we mean business and we're not crackpots? thanks, x

>
>I just wanted to let you know that I own a video on the school of the
>Americas, titled "Guns and Greed". It documents the history of actions
>of the soa, who funds them, why these civilian populations have been
>slaughtered, what role the soa plays in the wto, globalization and
>capitalism.
>
>I thought you might want this for the upcoming protest. Let me know if
>you do.

hi folks.

i just found out i have to leave town for work on saturday morning,
and i won't get back until late on thursday night. so, i'll have to
miss sunday's meeting. i'll be in touch via email over most of the
week, so if folks can post minutes of the meeting to this list, that'd
be great. if there's anything in particular i need to do, let me
know.

i just wanted to let y'all know ahead of time that i can't be there,
so no one is waiting for me before starting the meeting, etc. the
room at memorial (4pm, sunday 10/21) is confirmed, so that shouldn't
be a problem.

my apologies for not being able to attend, but a co-worker is having a
family medical emergency and i'm taking care of some responsibilities
for him so he can stay with his family.

In solidarity,

Dear X,

I'm refering this to you since I know you have a cell phone and I suspect
you'll be at the rally Saturday.
I got a call from X (can't find her last name) - one of the people on
her way to Georgia. They would like to call us at the rally on Saturday
and give us a live update of what's going on so we can announce it. They
are going to be using the following cell phone: XXX-XXX-XXXX. A guy called
X might answer it (I guess it's his phone).
Could you please call them at that number or at X home number at
XXX-XXXX and let them know if they can call you Saturday?

thanks,
X

p.s. could my name be taken off from the web site and from future meetings
as the outie for Action, since I really do not attend meeting regularly and
I cannot give out accurate information? thanks.

1) i got about 5 volunteers for the labor caucus at the last mapc
   meeting.

2) the next south central federation of labor (scfl) meeting is this
monday. i'll make an announcement there about the mapc-labor
caucus, and solicit other volunteers. also, i'll make another plea
for if there are union locals interested in joining mapc to do so
(and talk to me for help with it).

3) i requested a labor@madpeace.org list be created by the
   communications group.

4) at the next ufas meeting (date yet to be determined), i'll
introduce gillam's proposals for fundraising from our local.

no other requests to or from other committies at this time. o+e
should just be aware of my outreach efforts to the labor community, so
they can focus on other things.

Hi everybody,

I just heard on the evening news that about 100 special forces have started
engaging in combat in the south of Afghanistan. Pentagon is refusing to
confirm but the information comes from a high-ranking US official.
Since this just came in (5:30 p.m.) I propose we start organizing an
emergency action for tomorrow. I support the suggestion of having a picket
line, but an old-fashioned rally is also good. (What would be better for a
Saturday afternoon?)
I feel bad for discouraging everybody from having the action today, but I
was operating on information I had at that time, though I don't doubt they
started the action in the south earlier than 5:30 this evening.

Action Committee: I propose we stay with the same division of duties as we
arranged at our planning meeting, except that if we are going to have a
rally with speakers that we get some suggestions. I have a feeling x
is not interested in speaking at these rallies - she told me
recently that she just "didn't feel like it" for the first emergency rally
we had. I will still contact her.

So, let me know what you think.

MAPC FUNDS DISBURSEMENT POLICY
Adopted October 14, 2001, by the Coordinating Committee

(1) The Co-Treasurers are authorized to disburse funds as requested by each
Working Group, up to the following limits:

Fundraising & Finance $ 150.00
Communication $ 50.00
Media $ 50.00
Action $ 200.00
Policy $ 50.00
Education/Outreach $ 250.00
Arts & Culture $ 50.00

These limits refer only to money expenditures; Working Groups are encouraged
to obtain free or donated materials and services whenever possible.
(Working Groups should report the value of in-kind donations to the
Co-Treasurers; this information can assist the Coalition in obtaining
foundation grants.)

Funds within these limits may be disbursed either as prepayment to vendors
or as reimbursement for members' out-of-pocket expenses. Disbursement
requests should be submitted to the Co-Treasurers by the Outie for each
committee, and should be accompanied by appropriate documentation (receipts,
invoices, etc.). Except in emergencies, disbursement requests should be
mailed to MAPC, P. O. Box 422, Mazomanie, WI 53560-0422.

The Co-Treasurers may refer questionable, undocumented, or potentially
inappropriate disbursement requests to the Coordinating Committee for
review.

(2) Expenditures exceeding these limits must be approved by the
Coordinating Committee. Except in emergency situations, requests for
approval should be submitted by the Working Group in advance, prior to
expenditure or commitment of funds.

(3) All Working Groups are encouraged to work with Fundraising & Finance to
incorporate routine fundraising activities (passing the hat, selling
buttons, etc.) into their activities. Funds raised through these activities
will be used to support the work of the entire Coalition.

Any Working Group which wishes to raise funds or otherwise generate income
to support a specific major project (rather than for the Coalition as a
whole) should seek approval from the Coordinating Committee as part of its
request for expenditures of funds exceeding its limit . Examples would
include University funding for a prominent speaker, registration fees for a
conference, or bus tickets for travel to a national rally.

(4) The Co-Treasurers shall submit financial reports to the Coordinating
Committee and general membership on a monthly basis, or more frequently if
requested.

Please remember to update the "MEETINGS" page on the web site with your next
committee meeting date, time, place. Many of these entries are out of date.
It's really simple, just go to that page, click on EDIT at the bottom, and
change the existing text for your committee.

I'll work on getting the home page updated this evening - Key events needing
to be posted are the next meeting and the 11/17 soa event for sure, maybe
others.

Hello all,

As you may already know, I am stepping down as Education/Outreach Outie. I
have been in denial about my returned status as a student and I am
stretching myself thin with everything that I wish to accomplish, but my
education must come first at this point. I believe that it would be best
for someone to take this position that has the time to focus on it as is
needed. And....we have someone who has decided to do just that. Her name
is X. Her e-mail is X.

Does she have to manually be put on the coordination e-mail list? If so,
please do that. I am pretty sure I can remove myself. She is aware of the
meeting this Sunday. I'll continue to forward her pertinent e-mails from
cc until I am sure she is getting them. Thanks all. Take care,

X
