911DA Story: Story

I will never forget the morning of September 11. My husband and I had been planning our wedding to be held on September 22, 2002. That morning on my way to work I listened to a tape of music prepared by my organist so I could determine what my favorites were instead of listening to my morning news show. When I arrived at work people were frantic; the first plane had collided with the World Trade Center. Our office was chaotic, everyone had on their radios, we were receiving telephone calls from family members updating us with what they had heard, many of us were huddled into our break room where we have a TV....

I guess the worst part for me was when I heard a plane went down in Pennsylvania. My husband and I are "implanted Wisconsinites" we are originally from PA and were preparing to travel home for our wedding in a few days. A lady in the office came running to me and said Heather, another plane went down in some "burg" in PA, you better call home. I was frantic for a few minutes, I just wanted to hear my mother's voice to know that everyone was okay.

I later felt very selfish about these emotions, I was lucky that day...I did not lose anyone close to me. I will never forget the surge of emotion I had. The bravery showed by people that day is just amazing. I am proud, more now than before, of my heritage and the fact that I am an American.
