Three weeks before the events of 9/11/01 I had a vivid dream. I don't normally remember my dreams, but this was one of those dreams that wakes you up and makes you remember it. I was part of some bomb-squad team and we were all trying to get through a huge crowd of people and into a very tall glass building to stop a bomb. Everyone in the crowd was frozen still and they each had a Bible in their hands--which was very strange for me to see because I never have religious symbols of any kind in my dreams. Anyway, to make a long story shorter, I got into the building and went about 3/4 of the way up and had found the area of the bomb. But it went off before I could stop it. I was flipped over by the explosion and felt the building collapse under my back. Then an even stranger symbol appeared in the dream. I was "picked up" out of my body by what could only be called god--again, not religious and have never experienced religious symbols in any dreams. A voice said to me, "Just watch. Just observe my work." And a huge gust of wind blew over all of those people in the crowd who had been clutching their bibles; and I saw thousands dead in my dream. Normally this would have been a horrifying scene, but I felt a sense of peace. I knew that even in this tragedy, a god was there; and there was a purpose for it even if I couldn't see it or change the circumstances. This photograph captures for me that same sense of peace and calm and moved me to tears the first time I layed eyes on it. In my frame of reference, it is truly art because it captures the highest ideal of its particular subject matter.
