Tell us your story: Tirest Mulugeta In memory of September 11 As I watched the events of Tuesday September 11, 2001 unfold, I felt a great sadness for this country and to all the people who lost loved ones and friends to this attack. I've never felt this way before. For the first time in my life, I feel unsafe. As I was leaving my apartment, I turned on the news to watch the weather as usual and saw the first plane crash. I watched it with surprise thinking it was one of those accidents we been hearing once in a while. It never occurred to me that someone did it on purpose to hurt innocent people. Then I heard the newscaster screaming as the second plane smashed to the second tower. My mouth fell open when I saw the pictures that were on the TV. It was a scary and disturbing sight. Then the attack on Pentagon and the crash in Pennsylvania came on TV. I ran into the bedroom and woke up my sister and told her that two commercial airliners had been hijacked and had crashed into the WTC in NY because I couldn?t take it no more by myself. As I started telling my sister she jumped out of bed and start calling our parents because they lived close to Pentagon. The line was so busy, we couldn?t get through so we called everyone other people to check on everybody and told us that everything was ok. As hours passed by my sister and I, in our apartment, sat in the middle of the room afraid to move and watched the TV for the latest news. We even flipped from channel to channel to see if there was something that we missed. We were stunned somewhat in shock and looked at each other not believing as we watched the news developed in details. As I was watching and listening to the reporter I became angry at these faceless monsters that had disturbed my life. I am sure the people who did this have a reason to give up their life and destroy the others on their way, but I don?t think I will ever understand it. I believe it is wrong to be violent to make a point. They should have thought about another way to solve their issues. As a wise man once said for every problem there are more than one solution. I guess they picked the wrong one. When ever I hear death I think about those innocent lives and I keep imagining what it must have been like for the people in the tower who looked death in the face flying through the window. Ever since the attack things changed all over the nation. The security became tight and the people got fearful of getting into a plane. After the attack I remember how I felt hearing the airplane pass by let alone how scared I was to fly. I guess what I personally believe I have learned from this tragedy is to live every minute that I am given, and to give every moment that I live to accomplish God's plan for me here. And if I can say that there is some good that came out of this horrible event, I think it is that more people are aware that their lives need to be lived every moment of every day. And I think that it also has caused a lot of us to think of the people around us in a different light as well. We have realized that life is too short to fight over the little things in life. And I pray that this thought will stick with us for a long time to come. I will never look at things the same way again. I will never turn away my back on anyone again who needs my help.
