911DA Story: Story
September 11 is Teacher's Day in Argentina. Both my wife - Carlena Burns, an American citizen-, and I are teachers, and that morning we were enjoying one of those rare moments of breakfast with the kids, for schools remain closed on 9/11.
At 10 AM local time (9 AM in New York)a colleague from school called me: "Gonzalo, turn on CNN, please! It's so horrible!". That we did, and for the next hours, and days, we were struck by horror, pain, and dismay. We had lived very close to the Big Apple in 1991, while I was teaching in Bergen Community College, Paramus, NJ. We had learn to love the city the same way we love Buenos Aires. And we mourned with NY and all America the deaths of their people, which we sincerely felt our own. That same day I wrote a tribute,in Spanish, as an eulogy for the dead which I'd love to share with all who are insterested.
Today, September 11, 2002, we stood together, as we watched CNN once more, in silent homage to the victims. God Bless you all.
