911DA Story: Story

I arrived at school early the morning of September 11, 2001. I was supposed to be at jury duty, but had been released late Monday afternoon and wanted to be sure the sub would be released for the day. While I was glad to be at work, I was glad to have done my duty through jury service.

It was just under an hour before the students started that the first plane hit the World Trade Center. It took only a few minutes for all of the adults in the building to know what had happened and for the televisions to go on.

Fate intervened the day before when I was released from jury duty. As difficult as it was to spend that day with my students, I cannot imagine how I would have felt being away from them on September 11th.

It's now one year later. I didn't know what to expect of myself or my students today. It has been a difficult day, in terms of emotions. However, my students are my heroes today. They are facing the events of last year with determination to make the world a better place. They are sharing their hopes for peace and celebrating their freedoms.

Nobody could have been prepared for what would happen in our world. I could never have prepared for sharing these to life-changing days with young people. Together, we have made today, as everyday, a success.
