I was mid-way through my pregnancy September 11, 2001. As I watched the television coverage of the horrifying events of that day, I wondered what I was doing bringing a child into a world so full of war, famine and disease, hatred, violence and intolerance. As the day progressed, I was also witness to more of what our world, and specifically our country, has to offer -- courage, generosity and compassion, inspiration, hope and love. I vowed that day to teach my child to accept people and beliefs other than her own and to respect our country and cherish the gifts we sometimes take for granted that come with being an American.
