I was teaching at a small school in northern Maine and happened to take a break and stopped in the kitchen. Our cook told us that an airplane had hit the World Trade Center in New York City. We were told not to say anything to the children. We all looked at each other with disbelief; this couldn't have happened! Whenever we had a break that day, we were glued to the TV set. We all went home that afternoon in shock. I know that I hugged my husband and sons and thought about the thousands of families that were never going to be able to do that again. When the children came back the next day, there were many questions which we answered to the best of our ability. But many of them went unanswered. A year later, we planted and dedicated two trees and had a short ceremony on the school grounds in memory of those who died. Even my 90 year old father had a paper flag that was printed in our newspaper hanging in his window.
