Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th, 2001 Tuesday September 11th, 2001 was like any other day for me. It started out with waking up at 5:30am to get into the shower and get ready for school. This was a big day for my field hockey team and I. It was one of our big games against Wilson. I live in Barker, New York so not much happens here, well history wise. As a normal home field hockey game day my team and I would wear our skirts for good luck. Around 7:00 am my boyfriend John came to pick me up to go get my best friend and her sister for school. They both were on my field hockey team so they were wearing the same skirt as me. Around 7:30 am we arrived at school. First period I have Global Studies. It was my favorite class so it didn?t drag on as much as the rest of my classes. I was taking notes on geography. Before I knew it, it was 8:40 time to leave for my second period. Jill, Miriam and I always met outside our classroom before we went to our second class. That day was an ?A? day so we had gym. I thought to myself, ?Great just what I need this morning!? When I got to gym nothing big was happening just the ?same old same old.? After gym was over I went to Art. Around 9:45 the phone rang and my teacher just sat there and began to cry when he turned on the Television to CNN. A building was in flames. I couldn?t figure out where it was so I just kept quiet and watched. I found out minutes later when CNN replayed two airplanes crashing into the building. I knew this wasn?t just an accident but someone had done this on purpose out of hatred. At the bottom of the screen I read the that the buildings that I was watching burn were the World Trade Center in New York City. I was scared because I knew my Uncle Patrick works near there and walks by that building almost everyday at that exact time. As the bell for 4th period rang I walked out sad and scared not knowing whether to think one of my family members had been hurt or what. When I got to John, my boyfriend, I just hugged him for a minute. I went to fourth period and the television was on again. While I had been walking from Art to English a plane had crashed into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. All I could do was pray. After 4th period I went to Spanish. My Spanish teacher didn?t have the television on. I don?t think it was because she didn?t care. I think it was because she had lots to do. Spanish was a drag for me but seemed to go by fast today! In lunch no one at my table really said anything except lets just hope everyone was okay and none of our family members were involved. In the middle of lunch an announcement came over the PA system, ?All after school programs are cancelled. JV and Varsity Field Hockey games are cancelled until further notice due to the events in New York City today.? In a way I was mad that our game was cancelled but in other ways I was glad. The rest of the day was spent watching television. What I hadn?t found out until 9th period was that both buildings had collapsed and over 3000 people were believed dead. This event was bigger then Pearl Harbor. All I wanted to do was cry. As soon as the bell rang to leave and go home, I found John to get right home. When I arrived home my mom was on the phone trying to get a hold of my aunt to find out anything about my uncle. All circuits were busy so we couldn?t get through to New York City. We tried my aunt in California and even there we couldn?t get through. It was just amazing that this was actually happening. I was living history. My dad is in the Air Force so he got home early also. I asked my mom and him why someone would want to do this to us. I thought we were the country that everyone else loved. I was so upset that someone could take our planes and our people and use it against us in ways we have never experienced before. For the rest of the day I just watched the news to figure out more. At 9 o?clock pm President Bush made a speech to the nation. I watched that and gained some understanding of what we were going to do about this. For the next few days, it was just sitting and waiting to hear something from my uncle. It was amazing on how this event changed the United States overnight. I no longer felt safe here. I know that our security is stronger now but it seemed to me if someone can do this once they can do it again. No one at first knew who would do this to us. About a week later the FBI stated that Osama bin Laden was behind it. My family and I finally heard from my Uncle Patrick, he was okay and was home. He had lost many friends in the World Trade Center. My Aunt Catie lost some friends in the Pentagon. About 8 months later the troops over in Afghanistan still have not found bin Laden but will not stop fighting until they do. It worries me that this could still happen. Today, where the World Trade Centers once stood there is little of anything left. About 3,200 people died. Many firemen, police officers and EMS voluntaries risked their lives for so many others. Just how much people have helped with this, amazes me. I pray for all those who have lost their lives, who have lost family and friends. This has made America stronger as a nation.
