In San Antonio, Texas, most of us heard about "a big explosion" in New York on the radio as we went through our work day. When my husband called with further details, he said that a plane had crashed into one of the Towers; he and I both thought a small plane had lost its way. We couldn't believe it and felt sorry for the plane's occupants. When I turned CNN on, my first images were of the second plane hitting the building. I refused to believe what I was seeing. It couldn't possibly be. As the ongoing reports filtered in, I knew two things: History was being written before my eyes and that the United States and its citizens would never be the same. We sent our employees home to be with their families and to pray that the worst was over. We all awaited further reports with awe and anger. The people of New York were extremely brave and wonderful. In Texas, we felt great respect and admiration for them, their brave police officers and firefighters. We all wanted to be there to help. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My trust factor changed. I trust no one from the Mid-East. As horrible as that sounds, I can't find it within myself to forgive. How could they take so many lives for their cause? The positive side is that I've never felt so much allegiance to my country, my fellow citizens, my government, and my president. I thank God every day that Mr. Bush was in the White House when this terrible event occurred. He has given us reason to be a proud people once more. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The country's unity. I will never forget seeing Republicans and Democrats standing and singing together. It made all other issues in this country a moot point. U.S. and state flags are prolific now - they fly on every corner. It is a humbling and proud time for all of us. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Definitely.
