NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was a senior in high school when the tragedy occured. I will never forget where I was when I first learned about it. I was in my gym class getting changed when I heard someone saying that people were talking about war. I had no idea what she was talking about. I had never experienced anything like 9/11 in my life and I certainly never expected to. I asked her what she was talking about and she told me how two planes had crashed into the twin towers. No one really had many details about the attack at first. No one felt like doing anything for the rest of the school day. Everyone wanted to call their parents, family, and friends and make sure that they were alright. Being from New Jersey, many people have family members or friends that work in the world trade center. I remember watching the news most of the day in school and everyone was just shocked. I couldn't believe that something like that would happen to us, the United States. The main thing that I remember about the next few days is that I was constantly watching the news. My initial reaction was that I didn't want the US to fight back because I was afraid that it would turn into a nuclear race and in the end we would all be dead. But the more I thought about it, I knew that we needed to defend ourselves. I was kind of mad that our Intelligence Agencies were not prepared for some kind of attack. Don't get me wrong - I do not feel like it was our fault in anyway. However, I think our government should have been more alert to the clues and our security could have been better. After the attack, there would be stories on the news saying how this terrorist got past security with a fake ID or an expired one or how this terrorist wasn't supposed to be in the country but somehow he was. I visited ground zero a few months after 9/11 and it was an indescribable sight. One cannot even imagine the atmosphere and vibe that the wall mural projects. As soon as you walk onto the block behind the towers, the whole city becomes amazingly silent. Everyone is crying and it is absolutely like nothing else. I will never forget the events of 9/11. It taught me to appreciate everything and everyone and to always tell people how much I love them because you never know if you will see them tomorrow.
