NMAH Story: Story
That Night, September 11, 2001
I kiss my daughter good-night
Shes tangible, touchable
I want the twisted steel screams
To subside
I can still hear the cell phone I love yous,
they linger in the thick smoky air
Echoing that frantic love,
I absently stroke my daughters hair
Searing white hot disbelief blinds me -
I feel as stone cold as the rescuers
Ash covered agony repeats and repeats in the days images
Flash frozen forever in time and in my mind
There is no blanket of forgetfulness -
Except this moment
With my daughter
I let my tears fall into
Her sweet hair -
A final kiss good bye.
