I acted very much as a witness, caught up in the terrible events occuring before me without having the recourse of being able to physically do anything about it. I was watching mid-afternoon television, waiting for my children coming home from school and then sky television news broke the news that there had been an 'accident' in New York . I watched as the second plane plummetted into the World Trade Centre, I couldn't believe it was happening, it was only afterwards when reports were coming through about the phone calls coming from the trapped people inside and the people in the plane that the human cost became so much to bear. As a Northern Ireland Catholic, I have seen my share of terrorist attacks, I was burnt out of my home in 1971, we were the victims of three bomb attacks after that, but when it was happening, especially when we were being dug out of the first bomb attack, we had no time to think, no time to be aware of what was happening. I wouldn't have been as brave as those people trapped and knowing what was going to happen, I wouldn't even have been as desperate as those who threw themselves from the windows. My heart broke on 9/11 I planted a tree in my garden in Warrenpoint, looking over the Mourne Mountains, and wished for peace for those lost souls and for their families left behind in grief.
