Rusty:

Still here, and doing fine. I'm a little frazzled, that's all. The GWB is closed, as are all the tunnels. The ferries are running but are being used to transport the survivors to Jersey City. I don't know how to get back, but the best bet seems to hit some transit point and wait. The chance of getting a hotel room here is minimal. There's talk about transporting all the employees to the White Plains office and putting us up in a hotel, but any trains north- if running- will be mobbed. As for me, I'm sitting tight for now, and as soon as I can find an opening I'll take it. I think I'll go downstairs and scare up some provisions, just in case.

These are sirens everywhere down on the streets, grid lock still slowing emergency vehicles. People everywhere are standing on their roof, just looking at the horrific smoke plume. It is hard to believe the Twin Towers are gone. People in this office are talking of war, and I can understand this. What I don't understand is why someone would do this to us. What could they hope to achieve? The attacks are only symbolic and tragic. No world opinion will sway toward the attackers. Ans anyone who accepts responsibility for this insane attack should know there will be no mercy.

Remeber what I told you Yamamotosaid after Pearl Harbor? I am afraid we have awakened a sleeping giant. Yes, we are awake now. They have our full, undivided attention. I'm not so sure they want it.

A ghastly day, one I wish I had not witnessed or experienced. I remember looking up at that plane going down Fifth Avenue and idly wondering what the hell he was up to. Now I know, and I wish I didn't.

Anyway, I'll try to call when I can get an open line across the river.
