Chas:

This morning the medical school had a special grand rounds to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11. At this assembly, two international experts lectured about weapons of mass destruction and bioterrorism. After grand rounds, I headed into the operating rooms to do what I've been trained to do, that is to "save lives and stamp out disease" as Dad would say. At the same time I realized how ill equipped and poorly trained I am to care for victims of the disease known as terrorism.

Perhaps the training you are receiving and the work that someday you do will be more effective against terrorism. Understanding cultures, language and communication are more important here than management of airway, breathing and circulation. In the fight against terrorism, human communication has the potential to save more lives than all the surgeons and anesthesiologists in all the operating rooms in the world.

It's time for me to go back to airway, breathing and circulation. You - go read some Greek.
