Description

My name is Wes Meadows, my fiance and I were in NYC the weekend before September 11. We decided to extend our stay and were planning on leaving the morning of the 11th. My fiance met with a colleague for breakfast that morning and while I was busy packing, I saw the first reports on the news. I couldn't believe what was happening and when the second plane struck, all my thoughts turned to finding my fiance and ensuring she was ok. Cell phones were not working and I became frantic wondering if she was ok. I didn't know whether to stay in the hotel or leave to try and find her. Finally, she arrived shortly after the first tower fell and my fears for her safety were calmed. We decided we needed to head to the towers to offer any help we could. I am a former Army Captain and felt it was somehow my duty. We got to Canal and Broadway just after the second tower collapsed. As we were standing there just looking (police were not letting anyone go south), I looked at a billboard across the street. I decided to take a picture of it, the eeriness of it made us both cry. The picture is of a movie advertisement for the Schwatzeneggar movie "Collateral Damage" with the smoke from the towers billowing behind. I thought it would be an appropriate picture to contribute to this archive. Although we did not directly lose anyone our lives were deeply touched, I am from Boston (where the planes took off from), we were in New York, and we live outside Washington D.C. it seemed all the places that are close to us were directly involved in the tragedy. I hope this helps in your image base. Thank you for this opportunity.
