Title A name given to the resource "Satan in the Smoke" Emails Description An account of the resource On the morning of September 11, immediately after two planes crashed into the World Trade Center in Manhattan, photojournalist Mark D. Phillips took a picture that would prove to be one of the most evocative and disputed images of that tragic day. Many peple later construed the image of the smoke in his photo of the burning buildings to compose the face of Satan. These e-mails related to this picture provide a revealing portal into Americans' responses to the attacks in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Mr. Phillips:   My name is Connie Banks & I reside in Spartanburg, SC.  I was recently approached by a group of Professional Firefighters in Spartanburg about generating a fundraiser for the victims & surviving family members of the WTC attack.  Your photograph was one of the items we discussed.  I design & weave throws/blankets with various pieces of artwork displayed on them.  The firemen would like for  me to weave a throw/blanket with your photograph on it.  They wish to sell them across the nation & give the monies to the Red Cross/Firefighters or other supporting organizations for the same cause.  they have prepared an outline of how the monies would be distributed & how it could be used by those organizations.  I have explained to them that I am unable to reporduce your photograph without your written permission.  They understand & have asked that I contact you regarding the photograph.  Could you possibly give me a call at 864-578-9215 (h/o), 864-909-4194 (mo), or email me with your reponse.  I will be glad to forward the name & telephone numbers of the Spartanburg Firemen that are in charge of this project.   Again, thank you for receiving my email & I hope to speak with you or hear from you via email ASAP.  I sympathize with the cities of New York and Washington as well as the enitre nation.    God Bless America!!   Connie Banks      <br> September 11 Email: Date The local time and date when the message was written.
