Phillips took a picture that would prove to be one of the most evocative and disputed images of that tragic day. Many peple later construed the image of the smoke in his photo of the burning buildings to compose the face of Satan. These e-mails related to this picture provide a revealing portal into Americans' responses to the attacks in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. It has left a very bad taste in my mouth. Mark: I must say I had not heard of this contoversy until I was leaving the office yesterday, and not until now did I even look at the image. If I'm looking at the correct one, I see what could be interpreted as a Devil, but it is clearly smoke. This reminds me of the whole 70's issue of subliminal advertising, you know orgies in the ice cubes. Those that are very savvy with photoshop can detect digital manipulation, so if it has been altered it will come out. Let me say for the record I have no question in my mind that it was not! Not to put you down, but given how fast it was transmitted, and the craziness of the situation( Iwas shooting the same thing from my roof top as well) who would of thought to even do this. If you did your are far craftier man than I :-). Besides at that time we still didn't know what was really happening. And why did it take so long for anyone to notice this? I have not heard any of Vin's comments, but I more than anyone knows what you are going through with him. Remember I was banned for life from the AP by him and he refused to even speak to me about it, even after an editor took total credit for the mistake. Hold your head up, as difficult as it may be in a society where you are guilty until proven innocent.
