Saturday, January 26, 2002 9:58 AM SUPPORTING THE FAMILIES 100% (Article Re Backlash by &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp) I was appalled to read about victims' families facing fund backlash for taking an activist role in seeking compensation from the DOJ. What better cause could there be? Inspite of prior insurance/pension settlements of a million or more dollars to some of the families. That only replaces maybe 10 years, or 15 years of lost income of these INNOCENT victims. Is that all a life is worth? The DOJ settlements should have been with no strings attached.......no deductions....period. With our beloved country's reputation of lavish waste on questionable donations/awards etc., the DOJ awards are fully deserved by each and every Victim's family. I am a totally unrelated-to-any-victim-and -their family person who supports a full award to all the families for their pain and suffering as victims in an Act of War! I wanted to express our (family's) support of all the 911 families in the quest for fair treatment in distribution of funds, especially the Dept. of Justice Victim Compensation Funds> What people forget to factor in, and which the above article appearing in my hometown paper, the Mobile Register, on 1/26/02 also failed to mention, is that even though $1.6 million average settlement sounds like alot to an average citizen, this amount must replace anticipated loss of income due to the untimely death in an act of war/terrorism. The article gave the example of the husband of &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp, who earned $96,000 annually. His family is entitled to abt $1.1 but must deduct other insurance/pension awards of approx. $l.4 milliion leaving it questionable that the &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp survivors would receive anything from the DOJ award. Well, the pension/insurance settlements would only replace abt 10 years of lost income for the &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp, whose husband lost his life in an Act of War. Small compensation, I say! The DOJ award would add another 10 yrs approx. of lost income. These families absolutely deserve all the awards. Small compensation for innocent loss of life, especially, looking upon how millions and millions of dollars are wasted in this, our beloved country, for so-called "causes" not nearly as just as this one! By the way, I am not related to any victim or their families, except by total empathy, in their losses and in their quest for fair treatment.
