<text>On the morning of September 11, immediately after two planes crashed into the World Trade Center in Manhattan, photojournalist Mark D. Phillips took a picture that would prove to be one of the most evocative and disputed images of that tragic day. Many peple later construed the image of the smoke in his photo of the burning buildings to compose the face of Satan. These e-mails related to this picture provide a revealing portal into Americans' responses to the attacks in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.</text>

            <text>
Dear Mr. Mark D. Phillips:

I am a mother of four and I am a young age of 37. I saw your "devil"

picture. I know he is real and he was the cause of the terrible thing that

happened to New York. Trust me in the christian world, we know you did not

do anything to the picture. I am writing, e-mailing, you to let you know

that alot of people believe you did nothing to that picture. I am praying

more then ever, is the end near? I do not know, but I know if we do not

save more lives the devil will win. If there is anything good to come out

is that more people are coming to know and love christ. Think you for

sharing your picture with the world, maybe because of this you have lead

one more person to christ. What happened in New York could happen anywhere.

I for one can say that it scared the hell out of me. I am making sure I

thank God and then some everyday. Have a wounderful day and God Bless America.

Linda Beebe

Conyers, GA

lbeebe@mail.com

<<http://www.stellarimages.com/si02.html> <<http://www.stellarimages.com/si03.html> <<http://www.stellarimages.com/si04.html> <<http://www.stellarimages.com/si05.html> September 21, 2001

I would like to thank the hundreds of people who have sent me messages of support over the past few days. Please know that your messages have been a comfort in a terribly hard time in New York. I wish I could respond to them all.

Through a split second of a camera's shutter, I captured an image that many people are saying shows the face of the devil on the side of the burning tower. The image was also seen in videotape. I cannot explain how or why this happened, but those who think I somehow doctored the photograph are wrong.

Emails tell me how scared the rest of America is. Please do not let this photograph add to that. No matter what is made out of this photograph, please always remember the people who lost their lives, the children who lost a parent, and the heroes who rushed to save strangers.

Mark D.
