Phillips took a picture that would prove to be one of the most evocative and disputed images of that tragic day. Many peple later construed the image of the smoke in his photo of the burning buildings to compose the face of Satan. These e-mails related to this picture provide a revealing portal into Americans' responses to the attacks in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. My son, however, lives in Brooklyn and witnessed the second bombing take place at the World Trade Center. I must say, I was quite petrified when I couldn't reach him to see if he was ok. He, on the other hand, was able to get to the phone and call me a little after 12:00PM. His was the sweetest voice I could have ever heard! I cried, not just for him because he was safe, but for the thousands of innocent lives that were lost to such an evil force. I am a newly ordained Minister, and I found it so very difficult to speak comforting words after seeing the disaster on television. Now, after a week has passed, and we have seen the devistation in the faces of the crews working so feverishly to try to find some semblance of life amidst the rubble, my thoughts are not of fear. My thoughts are that of hope. We have seen a city turn around and see each other for the first time...helping each other as though their lives depended upon it. This is rich, this is love, this is God at work against evil. What better way to defeat the enemy! Now when we, as a nation, hear the words being sung... "God Bless America"..., we know that they are more than just words now. They are the heart of the country...the hope that we can survive, and the strength of the love to bring us together as a strong, powerful nation..."with liberty and justice for all!" It is our home, and we need to be proud of it. So, Mark, if you would like to share this letter with others, feel free. May you not be haunted by the scenes you have seen, but rather have renewed hope that we, as a nation, will rise again and stand with feet firmly planted in the ground, and with every breath we take, may it make us strong in mind, soul and body.
