February 22, 2002 To: Victim's Compensation Twin Towers [Via FAX #301-519-5956] You have asked for comments regarding victim's compensation as a result of the 9/11 tragedy. I can see no governmental justification for any other than token compensation for Twin Tower victims. I think it is admirable for employers to assume whatever obligation they feel toward their employees, but I see minimal obligation on the part of the government. I applaud the thousands of individual contributors to the victim's trust fund and feel the victims are entitled to every penny of this distributed equally to each victim. In my opinion, a dangerous precedent will be set if this legislation remains as is. I say "will be set" because I hope Congress will re-consider this legislation. Among the alternatives would be a cap of some figure, such as $100,000. And worse still, it is insulting to subtract the life insurance that these prescient individuals attempted to use to guard against untimely death. What about other victims of tragedies past and tragedies yet to come? Are we going to do this every time a terrorist act occurs? We haven't in the past, at least not to this extent.
