Monday, January 07, 2002 12:16 AM Federal Compensation Plan I truly feel bad for anyone who lost a loved one in the WTC attack. It was an unbelievably tragic and shocking part of our American History. Certainly the people who lost someone have had untold pain and suffering; however, I find it very morbid and almost disgusting that these people feel they should be compensated for their pain and suffering. No amount of money can reimburse them for their loved ones and no amount of money can remove the pain and suffering. Yet in our society today, it seems we must always find somebody to blame or someone who must pay!! Why the American taxpayer? Was the America government at fault for what happened? How could you say so. I do not believe that we could possibly look to our government to have expected or prevented what happened on 9/11/01. I am not saying that these people should receive nothing. I know there has been a private charity fund which has accumulated millions of dollars and these people should be generously compensated from that fund. Realize that if I die tomorrow for whatever reason, it is ultimately my responsiblity to see that my family has been taken care of through life insurance, investments, annuities, retirement plans and even social security. Surely, the majority of the people who worked in the WTC made enough money and were astute enough business people to ensure their families future. This along with all the private donations should more that take care of the survivors. However, the federal government has already decided to reimburse people for these deaths. Fine then keep the numbers such as the $250,000 cap reasonable. I read where the average compensation would be $1.6 million--surely that is enough. I have a college degree and if I work until I am 70, I will not earn that much in my entire lifetime and neither will many Americans. So lets please keep these figures reasonable and not look at compensating people for something for which there is no compensation.
