According to the television reports, an average $1.6 million payment is more than most citizens will earn in a lifetime. Public statements by certain whiners among the beneficiaries that they should be allowed to litigate (i.e., sue the airlines out of existence) cause ordinary Americans to become callous. Why not pay victims of flight 103? Why not pay Mr. wife? Why not pay the families of servicemen who died in Desert Storm or in Afghanistan or in upcoming battles around the globe? I fear that our immediate response to this tragedy with this offer will set an undesireable and impossible precedent. Any beneficiary of this offer who looks this gift horse in the mouth should have all benefits cancelled.
