Sunday, March 17, 2002 1:39 PM Denial of Gays and Lesbians Benefits of 9/11 Dear Sirs, I read with great sadness that you will be denying the spouses and loved ones of gays and lesbians the same benefits that heterosexuals and even illegal aliens will be receiving. I nod my head and wonder if the events of September 11,2001 have taught us anything at all. , a hero who happens to be gay, gave his life freely to save  others and his fellow Americans from becoming part of the disaster that was 9/11. The of the plane that slammed into the died needlessly as did the fireman who died in the line of duty aving and rescuing people after the first tower collapsed...what message are we sending out to their loved ones? That their heroism and efforts were for nothing? That their lives meant nothing to those who were close and dear to them? That the heros in our community are less than everyone else? What you are doing and saying is just what is so wrong with this country. To say that fetuses. illegal aliens stand a better chance at benefits than say Gays and lesbians loved ones? I stand back and I take alook at this picture and i ask myself: "what is so wrong with this picture?" You are willing to bend the laws a bit to support and benefit illegal aliens family members(and you never know if one of those illegal aliens may have been the father or mother of one of the hijackers). Yet, you will deny benefits that are equal to the ones that heterosexuals are getting? I cringe that our government allows such discrimination. What happened to all people are equal under the law? Or does that only apply to those that are heterosexual? We, in the gay and lesbian community, have had enough! we have had enough of people telling us that our way of life is wrong and unnatural. We have had enough of hatred towards our kind and our community while the government sits back and allows it to happen. And we have had enouhg of the discrimination based on our sexual orientation. I'm sure i speak like the rest in my community when I say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! It is time that these heros and the people that were close to them be recognized and compensated for their heroism instead of their heroism being swept under the rug like it were nothing.It meant something to us and it meant a lot to those who were loved by them. It is time for the government to end this discrimination and allow these benefits to be equal and freely given.
