Tuesday, December 25, 2001 2:05 PM Compensation for Domestic Partners of 9/11 Victims I am writing to express my support for equal and appropriate compensation to gay and lesbian domestic partners of victims of the September 11th attack. I searched the Department of Justice web site for any indication that such compensation is currently offered, but I could not find any such statements. It must be understood that each and every gay domestic partner who has lost his or her beloved in the despicable attack has suffered exactly the same emotional, financial, and psychological devastation as every legally married spouse in the same circumstances. Since US law prevents these individuals from being legally married, it is both crucial and appropriate for the US government to provide the necessary assistance these individuals so desperately need. Otherwise, the US government is making a dangerous and destructive statement that gay individuals are somehow less worthy of government support in their time of need; that is to say, less American and indeed less human. I would like to affirm that these individuals are every bit as American - and as human - as the other victims of the recent tragedies, and they are every bit as entitled to assistance in their hour of need. If you doubt that for a second, try putting yourself in their place. It's time for us all to remember that this nation was founded on the principle of 'liberty and justice for all'. There is no vagueness in this concept. Let us not taint the founding principles of our great nation with the poisons of bigotry and prejudice.
