Wednesday, March 27, 2002 7:34 PM exclusion of LGBT partners of victims of September 11 terrorism I am disgusted that our government is so blatantly discriminatory in denying benefits to the partners of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) victims of 9/11/01. It is completely heartless and immoral to deny benefits to the grieving partners of these victims of the terrorist attacks. As it is, LGBT relationships are not legally recognized by the government (due to prejudice). This makes it all the more difficult for LGBT folks to be acknowledged, recognized, and compensated for their equally great pains and losses of loved ones. However, LGBT folks participate in every way in our country, and their families, especially their partners, should also share in the benefits that have been amassed for the distribution to the mourning families of ALL victims. Aside from this moral/ethical reason, recent Harris Polls indicate that the vast majority of Americans are opposed to discrimination against LGBT people. Denying benefits to partners of LGBT victims from the attacks would be in gross violation of our country's public sentiment. Our country must amend the current policy and share the benefits with the partners of the LGBT victims.
