My father was sitting in the row of Flight 11 when it crashed into the North Tower of the WTC, and killed my best friend who worked for . Needless to say, the loss that I have suffered goes beyond any financial recompense. Nonetheless, I cannot share strongly enough my grave disappointment with compensation fund. How is it that a family can be penalized because the caregiver went to great lengths to insure their well-being in the case of death? My father grew up with NOTHING. He worked tirelessly and passionately for 51 of his 58 years. His first job was at 7 y.o. selling papers on the corner. He built a business and nurtured a family with a good work ethic and lots of love. Due to his talents and good character, he was successful and therefore generous to his wife and children. Now, that he is gone, my mother is left to try and salvage her well-being and that of my brother who has not yet even entered college. One would expect that with all the rest that she has lost - her soulmate, husband and partner, she should not have to lose her home and her quality of life. Furthermore, granted that my father suffered such unimaginable trauma and pain - watching the terrorists stab, wound and kill in front of his very eyes -- don't you think he would doubly want for her well-being, knowing that she goes to bed every night thinking of his excruating last moments. The system that has been created pays no heed to the magnitude of the individual losses suffered on September 11. But if nothing else, it is unconscionable to penalize responsible citizens for having insurance. Think about how you would feel if were you that was lost that day, and it was your family, your partner, your children, who were left a painful and uncertain future. That should be your guide as you define the standards of the compensation fund. These are not numbers -- but people. I would be happy to add to these thoughts at any time.
