Monday, March 11, 2002 4:58 PM 9/11 Fund Policies against GLBT victims Dear Mr. President: In commemoration of the 6 month anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, I am writing to urge you to do your part to not add insult to injury to those partners, children, and families of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender victims of the attacks. First, allow me to applaud the Department of Justice's willingness to aid undocumented aliens in their struggle to get their lives back to some degree of stability. However, the department's unwillingness to do the same for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people who live in states that do not recognize domestic partnership (or offer similar civil liberties to homosexuals) is tragic hypocrisy. Indeed there may be legal consequences on state levels to address, but this shattering event has demanded nothing less than major rethinking of many current policies. To refuse to do so in this instance is a insult to all Americans, and nothing other than an injustice to those who have already suffered an injustice of the sort they could have probably never imagined. I would hope a President of the United States understands there is little room for prejudice in what is considered a "civilized" nation. A failure to address the needs of all Americans, unfortunately, would contradict that notion. Thank you for your consideration to this matter.
